A new update has emerged amidst the speculation surrounding Mahendra Singh Dhoni's future in the IPL. According to Subramaniam Badriनाथ, former batsman for Chennai Super Kings, Dhoni has made it clear that if he continues to play in the IPL, he will not accept the role of an 'Impact Player'. This means Mahi would prefer to play the entire match as a wicketkeeper rather than just batting on the field.
The option of being an 'Impact Player' was considered quite significant for the 45-year-old Dhoni. Due to increasing age and fitness challenges, this rule could have allowed him to avoid the pressure of 20 overs as a wicketkeeper and come out to bat when needed. However, Dhoni's view is different.
Badriनाथ stated on his YouTube channel that Dhoni personally told him that he will not play as an Impact Player. His firm stance is that if he plays, he will fulfill the role of a full-time wicketkeeper and remain on the field for the entire 20 overs.
Badriनाथ believes that the role of an Impact Player could be entirely suitable for Dhoni in the current scenario. He mentioned that staying on the field for long periods affects Dhoni's body, a point also commented on by coach Stephen Fleming.
According to Badriनाथ, Dhoni now generally comes to bat in the final stages of the innings, and in such a situation, his use as an Impact Player could prove strategically beneficial for CSK. This would allow the team to benefit from Dhoni's experience and finishing ability while reducing the strain on his body.
This issue now casts the biggest question mark over Dhoni playing in the IPL 2027. If Mahi does not want to be an Impact Player and wants to stay on the field for the full 20 overs as a wicketkeeper, his physical fitness will be the deciding factor.
Dhoni stepped down from captaincy of CSK before the 2024 season, after which his batting role has become significantly limited compared to before. Despite this, his experience and ability to finish matches under pressure remain extremely valuable to the team.
Dhoni has won five IPL titles for CSK. The debate is no longer whether he will play as an Impact Player or not; he has clarified his position on this matter. The real question is whether Mahi's body will allow him to remain on the field as a wicketkeeper for another full IPL season?
This decision will determine whether Dhoni will be seen in the yellow jersey again in 2027.
