Tashkent Implements Climate-Adapted Navigation in Yandex Maps

Uzbekistan has joined a number of countries that are implementing digital navigation that takes into account climatic conditions. A pedestrian routing system has been launched that considers not only distance and time but also the presence of shade and high temperatures.

In August 2026, Yandex Maps launched the pilot feature 'green' route in Tashkent. This feature allows pedestrians to choose paths with wider tree canopy coverage, thereby reducing the impact of direct sunlight.

According to the international technology publication Techloy, Tashkent has become the first city in Central Asia and the Commonwealth of Independent States that has integrated shaded pedestrian routing into its main mapping service. Similar initiatives for adaptive navigation exist in the USA, Germany, and South Korea.

In Tashkent, where summer temperatures often exceed 35–40°C, shaded pedestrian corridors play a key role in urban mobility. The technology uses satellite image analysis and machine learning to map tree canopies through multispectral data, determining the proportion of pavement protected by vegetation.

The service algorithm classifies a road section as 'green' if the tree coverage reaches at least 60 percent. The system also calculates shadow distribution, continuous exposure to direct sunlight, and current air temperature values.

Processing satellite data enables the algorithm to continuously display and track large urban areas, transforming complex spatial data into understandable navigation options within the application.

Global interest in thermal adaptation technologies has grown against the backdrop of extreme weather trends. Data from the Copernicus Climate Service shows that in June-July 2026, the average temperature in Western Europe reached 21.62°C, which is approximately 2.8°C above normal, while in Spain, Portugal, and France, temperatures often exceeded 40°C.

Although digital mapping cannot replace urban forestry, including shade tracking provides a digital layer over existing infrastructure that can serve as a basis for future urban planning and climate adaptation strategies.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan announced the opening of an exhibition of Chinese brand products and the ninth International Exhibition 'Products of Silk Road Countries' in Tashkent. The events started on September 2.

The exhibitions are being held at the CAEx exhibition complex from September 2 to 4. Sherzod Ibragimov, Deputy Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan, attended the opening ceremony.

These exhibitions provide Uzbek entrepreneurs with the opportunity to interact directly with Chinese companies, find new partners, discuss investment projects, and establish joint production.

The exhibits feature products and technological solutions from various sectors, including digital technology, green energy, smart agriculture, construction, medicine, and pharmaceuticals. Goods from the automotive and textile industries, as well as consumer goods, are also demonstrated.

The business program includes planned B2B meetings and negotiations between company representatives. Discussions are focused on reaching agreements aimed at expanding export and investment opportunities.

The international exhibitions will be available at the CAEx exhibition complex until September 4.

Tashkent launches new section of 'green wave' traffic light system

A new segment of the 'green wave' traffic management system has been commissioned in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Shota Rustaveli Street. This section is located between the South Station and the Grand Mir Hotel. The system operates in both directions of travel.

According to testing results, the implementation of this system has reduced travel time on this stretch by almost 30%. In the direction from South Station to Grand Mir Hotel, travel time decreased from 11 minutes and 30 seconds to eight minutes, and the number of red light stops was reduced from six to two.

In the opposite direction, from Grand Mir Hotel to South Station, travel time was reduced from 12 minutes to eight minutes and 30 seconds. Here too, the number of red light stops was noted to decrease from six to two.

Overall, in both directions, the total travel time decreased by three minutes and 30 seconds, which corresponds to a reduction of approximately 30% compared to the figures before the system launch.

The 'green wave' system works by coordinating traffic lights based on the time required for vehicles to cover a specific road section. An individual green light interval is calculated for each subsequent traffic light.

Provided that drivers adhere to the established speed and maintain a steady pace, a vehicle starting on a green signal can reach the next traffic light while it is also green. The effectiveness of this system directly depends on road conditions and the ability to ensure free traffic flow.

Drivers are advised to start moving on a green signal, adhere to the established speed limit, avoid sudden braking and acceleration, maintain a safe distance, and obey traffic signals, yielding to pedestrians. The goal of implementing the system is to ensure smoother and safer traffic, reduce congestion at intersections, decrease waiting times, and help lower fuel consumption and harmful emissions.

Tashkent plans to create a green park and youth development center on the site of the former oncology center

The Tashkent city administration announced that an open green park and youth city will be created on a 4.36-hectare plot previously occupied by the Tashkent City Oncology Center. Existing buildings will be preserved, renovated, and adapted for public use.

Authorities emphasized that the creation of the youth city will not reduce the park's area. Educational and creative centers, a library, coworking spaces, simulation workshops, and startup studios will be located in the old buildings.

According to the city administration, the project does not plan to build separate commercial offices or other retail facilities. The area around the buildings will be landscaped and greened, remaining an open public space for residents of nearby mahallas, youth, and other citizens.

The main part of the plot will be allocated to the green park, while existing structures will be used to implement educational, creative, and public projects. The Tashkent administration also presented visualizations and parts of the presentation for the planned space.

The creation of the youth city is provided for in the road map for socio-economic development of Tashkent for the period 2026–2027, which was approved by a presidential decree dated July 27, 2026.

In accordance with this document, the youth city will provide training in modern professions demanded by the labor market, as well as future specialties through a dual education system. State buildings and structures within the youth city are planned to be leased to entrepreneurs working in the industry, construction, and service sectors. In return, tenants undertake to provide training to local residents and youth under the dual education system.

The project also includes high-tech, industrial-engineering, and service zones, educational and creative centers, a library, simulation workshops with modern infrastructure, and platforms for advanced practices. It also provides for a youth park, business offices, an entrepreneurship zone, and a startup studio.

A key aspect of the project is cooperation with entrepreneurs who organize dual education programs. This model is expected to help provide employment for residents and youth who have been trained in the youth city.

Responsibility for the implementation of the project is assigned to the Tashkent city administration, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Economy and Finance. It is planned that all planned activities will be completed by December 2026.
