Treatment of Swine Flu in Ayurveda and the Effectiveness of Home Remedies

In India, there is a common belief that any illness is first attempted to be treated with home remedies, and in some cases, Ayurveda is sought. A similar practice is observed in the case of swine flu. The question arises: can this disease be treated with Ayurveda? Should home remedies be used for this fever?

Swine flu is not a common cold, but a respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus. According to the WHO, Influenza A causes flu, and currently, influenza A viruses such as H1N1 and H3N2 are circulating among people; H1N1 is commonly referred to as swine flu in everyday language. In recent weeks, cases of this disease have been rapidly increasing across the country.

When an infected person coughs or sneezes, tiny particles of the virus from their body enter the air. If a nearby person inhales these particles, infection may occur. Furthermore, there is a risk of infection transmission if a person touches their nose or mouth after coming into contact with a contaminated surface.

Regarding this issue, Dr. Chanchal Sharma, an Ayurveda specialist from Delhi, provided clarification. She emphasized that it is crucial to understand the essence of the problem: swine flu is a viral infection, so an Ayurvedic decoction or any home remedy cannot be considered a scientifically proven alternative for destroying the virus. Ayurveda can be used to alleviate symptoms and support the body, but relying on it instead of necessary medical treatment prescribed by a doctor is unacceptable.

Ayurveda has various methods for treating respiratory problems and fever. People use traditional substances such as tulsi, ginger, and anise to relieve sore throat or cough, but medical science has no studies or evidence confirming that they are a cure for H1N1.

For mild flu, rest is recommended. It is important to maintain adequate hydration; coconut water can be consumed upon a doctor's recommendation. It is also necessary to stay away from infected individuals. Any treatment should only begin after consulting a doctor.

Doctors warn: Do not take antibiotics for swine flu symptoms, they explain proper treatment

Cases of swine flu are being recorded in several regions of the country. When symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, headache, and body aches appear, many people independently purchase and take antibiotics from pharmacies. However, doctors warn that this can be a mistaken action. Taking antibiotics without examination is not correct if there are signs of swine flu.

Doctors have shared methods of treatment and suitable medications for cases where swine flu symptoms are observed.

Professor of the Medicine Department at GTB Hospital in Delhi, Dr. Kuldip Kumar, reported that patients presenting to the polyclinic with symptoms such as cough, runny nose, and fever are currently being examined, and positive results for swine flu are being found among them. The treatment of these patients is carried out according to established protocols for combating swine flu.

According to Dr. Kuldip Kumar, swine flu is an infection caused by the influenza A virus, not bacteria. This is why taking antibiotics unnecessarily for viral diseases does not bring significant benefit, as antibiotics act exclusively on bacterial infections. Antibiotics can only be prescribed by a doctor if there is suspicion of a bacterial infection in the patient. Therefore, it is not recommended to start taking antibiotics independently for any fever or flu.

Symptoms of swine flu include high temperature (from 100 to 104 degrees), dry cough, sore throat, stuffy or copious nasal discharge, headache, digestive problems, and muscle aches. Some people also experience difficulty breathing. If a doctor suspects swine flu based on these signs, antiviral drugs may be prescribed after testing and assessing the patient's condition. One such medication is Tamiflu (Oseltamivir), which is prescribed upon a doctor's recommendation.

Dr. Kuldip emphasized that starting therapy promptly can help prevent the development of severe illness, especially in individuals at high risk.

Taking antibiotics for a viral infection does not lead to recovery because antibiotics only affect bacteria, not viruses. Unjustified use of antibiotics contributes to the development of antimicrobial resistance in the body's bacteria, which in the future can make medicines ineffective against real infections.

The Senior Doctor in Delhi, Dr. Kamaljit Singh Kant, noted that most patients with swine flu recover within a few days, but in some cases, the disease can progress severely. Special caution is required for people over 65 years old and patients suffering from chronic diseases.
