Former U.S. Congressional attorney and women's rights advocate Reese Everson stated that if Lindsay Clancy were African American, she would have been immediately labeled a criminal. Lindsay Clancy is accused of murdering her three children, who were allegedly suffocated by her in January 2023.
Clancy's lawyers do not deny that she suffocated the three children in January 2023, but they argue that at the time she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and therefore was not criminally responsible for her actions.
According to Everson, the fact that Clancy is an educated white woman and a nurse influenced how her actions are perceived. She noted: 'The unspoken suggestion is that no healthy, normal white American woman would do this. Therefore, only someone completely insane and in a psychotic state could commit something of this magnitude.' Everson added that 'class and race have already separated this woman, Miss Clancy, from her actions... If she were African American, she would likely be called a criminal.'
The prosecution claims that Clancy was of sound mind when she sent her husband to get food and suffocated her daughter Cora, five years old, her son Dawson, three years old, and eight-month-old son Callan while he was away. After this, Clancy attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window and remains paralyzed from the waist.
Tuesday marked the fourth day of jury deliberations without a verdict. The case has attracted national attention and divided public opinion, as supporters and opponents voice their views.
