Felix Pago raises $200 million to expand AI-powered financial services money transfers

Sending money home for immigrants is often fraught with difficulties: hidden fees, inconvenient apps, and endless forms, which creates stress for millions of Latin Americans working in the US who wish to reliably support their families.

To address this gap and move beyond simple transactions, startup Felix Pago has raised $200 million in a major Series B funding round. This cross-border money transfer market is valued at $160 billion annually, and Felix Pago aims to transform its operation by leveraging the potential of WhatsApp.

Felix Pago, based in Miami, announced the raising of $87 million in pure equity capital, with Andreessen Horowitz serving as the lead investor. Additionally, the company secured a generous credit line of $113 million from General Catalyst's Customer Value Fund.

The investment capital was supported by participants such as QED Investors, Castle Island Ventures, Switch Ventures, and Endeavor Catalyst. This significant influx of funds occurred during a relatively quiet winter for venture capital in Latin America.

Felix Pago solved a serious behavioral friction problem: users do not need to download separate applications or memorize complex login details. Instead, they can open WhatsApp, message a friendly chatbot, and the money will be transferred seamlessly.

The company has achieved impressive results in high-traffic corridors such as Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, and El Salvador, processing $8 billion for six million people via WhatsApp.

However, basic transfers are just the starting point for user acquisition. Felix Pago sees an opportunity to become a de facto financial hub for this demographic, which is chronically underserved by traditional banking services. The company is actively implementing lending and launching specialized savings products, and recently added a mobile top-up feature directly from the chat.

Thus, users can instantly purchase a tariff plan for a relative in Bogota directly through the chat screen. The ultimate goal is to ensure seamless financial integration within the messenger that users use daily.

A significant portion of the new capital is allocated to artificial intelligence development. CEO Manuel Godoy is developing a deeply conversational AI assistant designed to help ordinary users make more informed financial decisions. This digital advisor mimics the trust built through in-person banking interactions, offering an intimate and very fast interaction experience.

Godoy emphasized that such a conversational interface gives people the feeling of interacting with a real, empathetic person, which fosters unwavering brand loyalty. In the battle for dominance between traditional competitors like Western Union and digital giants such as Remitly, Felix Pago is radically changing the playing field.

The company plans to soon begin operations in Brazil and Venezuela, signaling the rapidly evolving war for cross-border money transfers, in which this startup is making a powerful contribution.
