The 500 Years Monument, designed by Oscar Niemeyer on Porchat Island in São Vicente, was grandly reopened on August 27th after the completion of 14 months of revitalization work.

This monument in the Baixada Santista area was originally inaugurated in 2002. It was conceived as a sea-facing viewpoint and is dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese arrival in Brazil, which was marked in 2000.
The renovation work began in June 2025 and included the installation of new lighting, painting, replacement of flooring, repair of bathrooms, as well as improvements to access and traffic organization around the site.
Additionally, a memorial sign honoring Niemeyer has been added to the grounds. This installation reproduces the architect's quote about the memorial's concept: 'The idea was to mark the arrival of the Portuguese in Brazil with this small monument. Everything that would tell of the landscape, reminding visitors of this event. The large concrete structure, facing the sea, marks the celebration of the 500th Anniversary of Discovery.'
Access to Porchat Island is available between Itaara and Millionários beaches. The area is considered one of São Vicente's tourist attractions and includes leisure spots such as Ilha Porchat Clube and the Terraço Chopp restaurant, which has been operating for over 50 years.
The 500 Years Monument, shaped like an arch, is intended to stand out against the landscape. The structure functions as a viewpoint offering views of the beaches of São Vicente and Santos. Another interesting fact is noted: according to the São Vicente city hall, the monument points directly towards the National Congress in Brasília.
Visiting the 500 Years Monument is free, and the viewpoint is accessible 24 hours a day. The restoration of the 500 Years Monument is part of an investment program aimed at preserving and increasing the value of the municipality's historical and tourist sites.
Other works have already been carried out in this region, such as the Gonzaguinha New Boardwalk, the Crazy Pier, the Pele Pier, the Children's Fountain, and the Youth Park. Further phases are planned, including the redevelopment of the 21 Irmãos Amigos square, as well as the Biquinha and 22 de Janeiro squares.
