Kaizer Chiefs Coach Fernando Da Cruz Supports Captain Brandon Petersen Despite Goalkeeper's Errors

Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen is facing criticism for recent errors in goal. However, the club's head coach Fernando Da Cruz has expressed full support for the captain, insisting on maintaining complete trust in the goalkeeper, even despite intense scrutiny of his costly mistakes this season.

Last season, Petersen, 31, was one of Chiefs' key players, securing 15 clean sheets, which helped Amakhosi finish in the top three of the Betway Premiership table. Nevertheless, the goalkeeper faced a difficult start to the new season, with his latest error leading to a draw between Chiefs and Richards Bay.

Petersen's mistake also came at a high cost in the MTN8 tournament, where Chiefs were eliminated from the quarterfinals by Golden Arrows. Despite the criticism directed at the goalkeeper, Da Cruz does not intend to change his approach or abandon faith in Petersen.

Coach's Support

Speaking ahead of Sunday's match against Siwelele, the Chiefs coach acknowledged that he will still speak with Petersen about his recent performance but emphasized that his goalkeeper remains an important part of the team's plans. Da Cruz noted that Petersen made errors last season as well, but he also had a very good season, bringing many points to the team. The coach stated that he trusts him completely because he is the captain, and that although they will discuss the situation this weekend, the team's playing model will not change, and they will continue to play as usual.

Da Cruz's support comes at a time when Chiefs are striving to maintain their unbeaten start in the Betway Premiership. Amakhosi are in third place in the table, having earned eight points in four matches, two points behind second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns and five points behind leaders Orlando Pirates, who have played one more match.

As Chiefs aim to close the gap on the top two teams, Da Cruz made it clear that Petersen's recent blunders will not lead to a change in the team's philosophy preparing to face Siwelele at Dobsonville stadium on Sunday.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz was pleased with how his substitutes influenced the game on Wednesday, but admitted that the team's inability to convert their dominance into three points caused him frustration.

The Chiefs team came back twice after falling behind at Princess Magogo Stadium. The winning moment that secured Amakhosi one point was created by Siphesile Ndlovu in the 77th minute. This goal was achieved after sustained pressure from Chiefs, especially thanks to the entrance of Dylan Solomon who repeatedly delivered dangerous crosses into the penalty area. Vandile Duba and Asanele Velebayi also brought fresh energy as Chiefs tried to win the match.

Da Cruz highly praised the work of his bench. The French coach noted: 'The idea was to bring on fresh players and add speed, as the players who started the game were very tired. I am very happy with the performances of the players who came onto the field. We had two big chances, one with (Etiosa) Igodoro, another with Duba, so I am glad about the attitude of the players who influenced the game.'

Despite the result leaving Da Cruz with mixed feelings, a positive aspect was that Chiefs controlled territory and possession for a long time, especially after the break. However, the team twice found itself in a situation where it had to chase the opponent due to defensive errors that allowed Nkabane Khulu to score twice for Richards Bay.

'Today we have eight points, but usually we should have had 12 points because we also made mistakes against Mamelodi Sundowns,' said Da Cruz. 'So today we need to learn from our mistakes, keep working hard, and look ahead.'

Despite his frustration, Da Cruz felt that Chiefs demonstrated a performance worthy of more than one earned point. He emphasized: 'I have two different feelings—I am happy with the team's performance because they played well, but we cannot make such mistakes at this level.'

Thus, Chiefs' night can be characterized as follows: the substitutes gave them energy for a counterattack, the attack created enough chances for a win, but defensive errors proved costly once again.
