To ensure the safest return of children to schools, Dubai Municipality conducted an inspection of over 500 educational institutions. The check covered cafeterias, building infrastructure, swimming pools, and even students' school uniforms.
Authorities combine physical inspections with intelligent monitoring to guarantee that all aspects of school life meet sanitary and regulatory requirements. Inspection teams visit school cafeterias and use the DM Checked digital platform to verify permits and ensure menus comply with approved dietary recommendations.
The Municipality also pre-reviewed and approved food suppliers and cafeteria menus before the start of the new academic year to ensure students receive safe and nutritionally balanced meals. A statement to Khaleej Times noted that the goal is to provide students with a safe dining environment at school while promoting healthy eating habits and positive behavior that supports their well-being and quality of life.
Inspections go beyond cafeterias. Municipal staff check ventilation systems, air filters, water tanks, and cleaning logs in all school buildings. Pools are also checked for compliance, including the presence of certified lifeguards, rescue equipment, and first aid kits.
The city authority has also increased control over food contact materials available in the local market. About 800 items, including bottled drinking water and food containers, were tested to confirm their safety. School uniforms were collected from retail outlets and suppliers for analysis at the Dubai Central Laboratory to verify compliance with safety requirements.
Parallel to the inspections, authorities are launching an awareness program targeting students, parents, school staff, and cafeteria workers. Interactive workshops introduce students to the 'Smart Food Choices' system, which uses color coding (green, orange, red, and black) to help young people make healthier food choices.
Students are also receiving practical advice on food hygiene and personal hygiene, including proper handwashing and safe lunchbox storage. Other activities focus on reducing food waste and promoting responsible consumption. These programs demonstrate how positive daily practices can contribute to environmental protection and natural resource conservation.
Nutrition specialists, cafeteria staff, and school safety personnel are undergoing targeted training on approved requirements for food preparation, storage, and handling. As part of the UAE Family Year, the Municipality is also providing parents with practical recommendations through digital and traditional channels. The aim of this initiative is to help families prepare balanced and safe meals at home and reinforce healthy habits outside of school hours.
