The photo project 'One Body. One Lens. Our Story.' is a visual journey through the Soweto area, capturing the everyday beauty, style, community, and dynamism of life. A special magic arises when two creative visions move in unison, which happened during the creation of this photo exhibition project.
Instead of following a pre-set list of shots, the project was built around a simple idea: to follow the sun and create intuitively. The project covers three locations in Soweto, demonstrating various manifestations of kasi culture—from fashion and dance to skate culture and the quiet beauty of the mundane.
Chapter One: Dance and Fashion
The first story focuses on an individual whose creative journey began with dance. For him, dance became a source of confidence, a sense of community, and purpose before he delved into the connection with fashion and the individuality of Skhotana culture. This evolution led to the development of a multidisciplinary creative practice, where his works continue to change forms of self-expression.
The photographs reflect this transformation through clothing, attitude, and movement. Rather than viewing fashion as a starting point, the shots explore the path that led to it: how dance can generate style, how style leads to creativity, and how the linguistic code of creativity is formed in its birthplace environment.
Chapter Two: Skate Culture in Soweto
Skateboarding helped Geezy venture beyond Soweto, opening up opportunities that started with a simple skateboard and a place to ride. His journey culminated in him working with younger skaters in the community through the platform others.skateboarding, introducing them to the culture that shaped his own path.
Here, photography becomes more kinetic. The images react to the speed and unpredictability of skateboarding, capturing Geezy in motion while the surrounding environment remains an important part of the frame. The result is not so much a documentation of tricks as a portrait of movement, community, and potential.
The final part of the exhibition further simplifies the approach. In the Bramfisher area of Soweto, the camera moves through the neighborhood without a specific subject. There is no formal staging or predetermined sequence; instead, the photographs emerge from everything that catches the eye: people, light, gestures, interactions, and fleeting moments.
Familiar faces appear along the way—friends who grew up with Cheddar Nunez, and children from the area. Consequently, the photographs begin to feel less like an observation of a place and more like a record of home. It is here that the project 'One Body. One Lens. Our Story.' finds its strongest point of connection.
Instead of presenting kasi through the familiar visual language of absence or limitation, the exhibition focuses on what already exists: energy, friendship, humor, beauty, movement, and style. For the young models, the camera serves as a way to offer them a different view of themselves, where their presence holds as much significance and intention as models in studios, advertising campaigns, and magazines.
From dance to skateboarding, from fashion to community, from creative ambition to daily life. The three locations present three different ways to see the same city, but together they form a photographic documentation of a day spent closely examining one's hometown.
