The bowling coach for the Lions team, Alan Donald, expressed strong support for the expanded internal structure of Cricket South Africa (CSA), emphasizing that increased playing time will help develop talent and revive ambitions regarding Test matches.
He highly commended the governing body's decision to expand competitions across all formats. This reform includes several important changes within the Pro20 Cup, where 15 domestic unions will compete alongside the SA Emerging team in two groups of eight teams.
This format allows for genuine 'David versus Goliath' style matches, providing lower-level players with an unprecedented experience of facing top-tier teams. Donald noted: 'I am a big fan of scouting talent in South Africa. In T20, when you go to Oudtshoorn, we will get guys from the Border. There might be some guys—the so-called 'giant killers.' Someone will enter the team that faces Division 2 teams.'
Donald's assessment confirms his support for CSA's innovations. He stressed the importance of first-class cricket for rising players and the Proteas national team in Test matches. 'I think it is a big step forward that these guys are gaining experience in the first-class system, in Division 1, against quality opposition,' Donald observed. 'Everyone is shouting about 'more cricket, more cricket'—now we have it. Now it's time to react.'
The first-class series will also allow Division 1 teams to play more red-ball matches. Increasing the number of games gives young players the necessary experience in long formats, especially as the men's Proteas squad continues to strive for more red-ball matches. Donald added: 'Moreover, the red-ball season brings me more cricket, more taste of Test matches. Right now, the conversation is more about the desire to get into this Proteas squad. There is hunger for it, and that is great to hear.'
For Donald and the Lions coaching staff, Test cricket remains the absolute pinnacle of the sport. They discuss the mentality, intensity, and intent of Test matches. Donald stated that while the quality of opponents cannot be controlled, one can control one's own standards. 'There are good teams, and we must earn the right to challenge them by building these foundational blocks.'
The Proteas fast bowling legend also warned that utilizing squad depth will be critically important to navigate the complex, expanded calendar. He noted that all available resources will need to be used to 100% this year, as challenging games lie ahead, such as on the tricky pitch at Grey College, which could change.
