Afro soul artist and medical doctor, who received a SAMA nomination, Dr Smama, is releasing his first collaborative track with Nhlanhla Mafu from the group Mafikizolo. The song is titled Isifiso Sami.
South African music turns to traditional storytelling as a source of inspiration, as Afro soul vocalist and doctor Dr Smama teamed up with Mafikizolo vocalist Nhlanhla Mafu to create a new love composition.
The artist, known as the SAMA nominee, whose real name is Sindile Simama, and Mafu will release Isifiso Sami, which translates to 'My Desire,' on Friday, September 4th. This track combines modern Afro soul with the nostalgic sound of the traditional Maskandi guitar, offering a different perspective on the modern love song.
For Dr Smama, this release marks a departure from his usual style. The songwriter, who previously wrote for artists such as Berita, Nokwazi, and the late Lundi Tyamara, recorded a song written by an external composer for the first time in his career. He noted that the influence of Maskandi immediately caught his attention and took him outside of his usual gospel-soul sound.
Dr Smama emphasized that the song goes beyond romance, presenting love as a conscious and vulnerable choice to stay with someone despite external pressure. The collaboration is also the first studio recording between the two artists, who have been friends for over twenty years.
Mafu stated that they intentionally waited for a song that felt unique and authentic, rather than rushing the collaboration. She believes that Isifiso Sami conveys the depth of lyricism and traditional narrative, which she feels has been lost amidst fast digital trends.
By blending the Maskandi guitar with Afro soul, the song aims to connect traditional African storytelling with modern music and unite listeners of different generations. Isifiso Sami will be available on major digital streaming platforms starting Friday, September 4, 2026.
