JLR launches Range Rover Electric in India: 600 km range claimed, 20-minute charge time

Jaguar Land Rover has officially launched its Range Rover Electric SUV in the Indian market after a long wait. This new model features an aggressive design, a powerful battery pack, and advanced functions, marking the company's entry into the fully electric vehicle segment. Although the company previously had a presence in the hybrid segment for five decades, the Range Rover Electric is the manufacturer's first purely electric model.

The company claims that the Range Rover Electric will appeal to everyone due to its combination of power, luxury, off-road capability, and electric technology. Developers ensured that Range Rover owners can experience the same level of performance in the electric version as in the traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) model.

Starting today, reservations for various configurations of the Range Rover Electric are open in India. Available options include the short-wheelbase Autobiography trim, as well as long-wheelbase versions in the SV, SV Ultra, and SV Black trims. The company offers an eight-year warranty or a 160,000 km mileage warranty on the SUV's powertrain, though JLR clarified that warranty terms may vary by region.

The Range Rover Electric is equipped with two permanent magnet electric motors, each rated at 260 kW. These motors collectively provide a maximum output of 405 kW and a torque of 850 Nm. According to JLR, this performance will feel comparable to a V8 gasoline engine. The vehicle can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds, and acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h takes only 2.7 seconds, ensuring high highway overtaking speed.

These motors utilize silicon carbide semiconductor technology. According to the company, this technology allows for switching speeds in the microsecond range, thereby improving the performance of the electric motors under various driving conditions.

The Range Rover Electric is fitted with a powerful 118.5 kWh lithium-ion dual-layer battery pack, consisting of 344 prismatic cells and operating on an 800-volt architecture. The company states that after a full charge, the battery can provide a range of approximately 600 kilometers (according to WLTP certification), with an expected real-world range of at least 535 km.

The charging system has also been significantly improved: using a 350 kW DC fast charger, the battery can charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 22 minutes. Jaguar Land Rover also notes that a 10-minute charge provides enough energy for about 220 km. Furthermore, the 800-volt system includes a split charging function, allowing customers to manage the charging process according to their needs.

The Range Rover Electric integrates an Intelligent Torque Management (ITM) system capable of controlling motor response in just 50 milliseconds. JLR asserts that this is hundreds of times faster than traditional internal combustion engine systems. It also features an Intelligent Drive Dynamics (IDD) system that distributes torque between the rear wheels as needed.

Maintaining its SUV reputation, the Range Rover Electric can confidently navigate obstacles: the company states that this electric SUV can easily drive through water up to 900 mm deep. With one-pedal driving mode, it can climb slopes up to 33 degrees, and when traversing hills, it can handle gradients up to 45 degrees. Ride comfort is further enhanced by a twin-tube pneumatic suspension.

For this electric model, the company has patented over 300 inventions for the first time. Among them is a thermal management system that optimizes the operation of the battery, charging, and range in extremely hot or cold conditions. JLR claims this can increase the range by 40 km and reduce energy consumption for heating by nearly 40%. A 'battery digital twin' monitoring system tracks over 900 diagnostic parameters, and Over-The-Air (OTA) software update technology allows for prompt detection of technical malfunctions and notification of service needs before visiting a service center.

Before the launch, the Range Rover Electric underwent rigorous testing by JLR. Prototypes and test vehicles completed over 1.5 million kilometers of physical testing in various parts of the world, including the Arkhangelsk region in Sweden, where temperatures drop to minus 40 degrees Celsius, and the Dubai desert. Additionally, over 250 thousand hours of virtual testing were conducted to ensure battery reliability and safety.
