Spinach is a nutritious green vegetable widely used in home cooking, preparing dishes from spinach paneer to dal and paratha, and it is liked by most people. Although spinach is easy to find in the market during winter, sometimes in summer there is a desire to eat it, but it is unavailable, which creates problems for lovers of this vegetable.
If you also love spinach, you can quite easily grow it in home pots. Growing spinach does not require a large garden; one pot placed on a balcony or roof is enough. With the right soil, watering, and minimal care, you can use your freshly grown spinach in about a month. Below is a guide on how to easily grow spinach at home.
When choosing a pot for growing spinach, you should not take one that is too small. You need to choose a container that provides enough space for the plant to grow. The pot must have drainage holes at the bottom so that water does not stagnate in the soil. A pot with a width of about 10-12 inches is suitable for growing spinach in a container.
For good development, spinach needs soft, loose, and nutritious soil. To create suitable soil, you can mix garden soil with well-rotted compost or manure. It is important that the soil is not too heavy or sticky, as waterlogging can damage the plant's roots.
After filling the pot with soil, do not bury the spinach seeds deeply. They should be sprinkled with a thin layer of soil and gently watered from above. In the initial stage, it is better to maintain soil moisture using a sprayer instead of watering with a strong jet, as this will prevent the seeds from shifting. If everything goes correctly, the seeds begin to sprout in about 5-7 days.
The spinach soil should remain moist, but water should not accumulate in the pot. Water when the top layer of the soil feels dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Since the need for water increases in hot weather, it is recommended to water based on the condition of the soil.
Spinach needs light, but the plant absolutely dislikes excessive heat and intense midday sun. Receiving moderate light for 4-6 hours daily promotes good growth. In hot weather, place the pot where it receives morning sun and is in light shade during the day.
With proper care, spinach seeds can germinate in about a week, and the leaves become usable in 30-40 days. When the plant's leaves have grown well, instead of digging up the entire plant with its roots, you should cut the outer leaves. This stimulates the appearance of new leaves from the center, allowing you to harvest fresh spinach from the same plant multiple times.
