A successful operation involving the simultaneous transplantation of a liver and a kidney was performed for the first time in the history of local medicine at the National Medical Center of Uzbekistan.
The operation was performed on a woman from the Samarkand region. For eight years, she battled a serious liver disease, and for the last four years, she had been undergoing hemodialysis due to end-stage renal failure.
The patient's condition was deteriorating, and her family attempted to raise funds for treatment abroad, including selling their home. However, the required amount proved unattainable, especially considering the high costs of treatment and donor care in India, where she was recommended to go.
After consulting the National Medical Center, it was determined that in addition to kidney problems, the woman had developed liver cirrhosis caused by Hepatitis C. Medical specialists explained that in such situations, transplantation of only one organ might be insufficient.
Consequently, the optimal solution was to perform a combined transplantation of both organs. The operation was successful, and doctors emphasized that such complex procedures are usually performed only in countries with highly developed transplantology practices. Currently, the patient is in the recovery phase and is returning to her normal lifestyle.
