Amid ongoing nationwide discussions about E20 gasoline, the Goa government made an important statement in the legislative assembly. Minister Pramod Sawant reported on Tuesday that no complaints have been received from consumers, vehicle owners, automotive associations, or garages since the introduction of E20 gasoline in the state.
He clarified that citizens facing issues related to E20 gasoline can file a complaint with the Department of Civil Supplies. The Minister emphasized that despite the absence of official appeals, the government will closely monitor the situation.
Deputies, including Venji Vegas, Vijaya Sardesai, and Cruz Silva, raised the issue of E20 gasoline. They expressed particular concern regarding vehicles manufactured before 2023. In their view, using E20 in such cars leads to reduced fuel efficiency, decreased performance, and increased maintenance costs. Increased strain on taxi drivers and motorcyclists was noted. The deputies demanded that customers be given the option to choose between ethanol-free gasoline or unmixed fuel.
Minister Pramod Sawant stated in the legislative assembly that E20 is under the jurisdiction of the central government and is being implemented as part of central policy. This policy was launched in Goa in 2023. He also noted that the Department of Civil Supplies has been instructed to inspect the situation, monitor, and test the fuel.
In a written response, the minister indicated that E20 gasoline is distributed in Goa through three state-owned oil companies. Since 2025, it has been supplied to 157 retail outlets across the state. The government asserts that safety studies and field tests for E20 have been conducted by various institutions, such as the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), and IIP.
The Minister acknowledged that some reduction in fuel consumption may be observed in vehicles designed to run on E10 gasoline. According to him, after using E20 fuel in E10 standard vehicles, consumption might decrease by approximately 3–5 percent. He also assured that car manufacturers would not affect the warranty of vehicles running on E20 gasoline.
According to government data, over 20 million two-wheeled vehicles and about 3 million cars are operated in the country on blended fuel. The Minister added that there have been no complaints of engine failure directly attributable to the use of blended gasoline. Furthermore, over 30,000 quality checks have recently been conducted at petrol pumps across the country to monitor impurities and fuel quality.
The Goa government confirmed that although there are no official complaints about E20 in the state, vehicle owners or consumers can approach the Department of Civil Supplies if they experience problems with fuel consumption, performance, or other aspects. An investigation and fuel testing will be conducted upon receiving a complaint.
