Food crisis intensifies in Pakistan: Population faces shortages of bread and rice

The situation in Pakistan is extremely difficult: the country's population, which has long been struggling with an economic crisis, finds itself in a predicament, experiencing a shortage even of basic foodstuffs. Data published by the Pakistani government indicates a continuous worsening of the food crisis.

According to information from the report, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has identified a rise in food insecurity across the country. People are increasingly needing items such as milk, bread, rice, and meat.

A report by Pakistan Today, referencing PBS statistics, revealed the severe situation in the neighboring country. It states that Pakistani families are consuming fewer products across most categories. Food insecurity in the country is steadily increasing as ordinary citizens' access to adequate nutrition declines.

Circumstances have deteriorated to the point where, against the backdrop of rising food insecurity, families are forced to reduce the quantity and variety of their diet. According to PBS, over the last six years, Pakistani households have reduced consumption in almost all major food groups. This reduction has been observed in both rural and urban areas. Pakistani families are cutting back on consumption of products such as wheat, rice, meat, milk, and tea.

The report indicates that the proportion of families facing moderate or severe food shortages in Pakistan has increased from 15.92% in 2019 to 24.35% by 2025. Furthermore, the level of severe food insecurity has more than doubled, rising from 2.37% to 5.04%. This means that more than a quarter of Pakistani families are facing hunger and malnutrition to some degree.

Pakistani families are now preparing less rice, baking smaller flatbreads, eating less meat, and reducing the amount of milk allocated for children. Additionally, a decrease in tea consumption has been noted. Overall, there is a reduction in consumption across numerous food categories. As food prices rise, families are compelled to consider the size of their purchases.

The Pakistan Today report not only exposes Pakistan's dire situation but also serves as a warning that the continuous decline in the quantity and quality of food consumed could negatively affect future generations. This potentially could lead to health problems and nutritional deficiencies. The most alarming aspect is that food imports have become a significant part of the country's economy.

Although Pakistan's economy is traditionally defined as agrarian, the quality of food in the country has declined. According to the report, Pakistan has been a net importer of food since 2021. The situation in rural areas is worsening, putting pressure on cities as well.
