Anbernic has unveiled the RG 55G1, its latest Android handheld console, which incorporates a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. This new device also draws attention due to its horizontal design, resembling the format adopted by the Nintendo Switch Lite.
This introduction marks a novelty for the company, which was previously known for focusing on handhelds primarily intended for emulation, using Unisoc and Rockchip chips in its past models.
The new handheld is equipped with a 5.5-inch IPS screen, featuring a 16:9 aspect ratio and Full HD (1080p) resolution. The panel is fully laminated and integrated into the front of the device. Internally, the RG 55G1 features the Snapdragon G1 Gen 2, a 4nm chip with two Kryo Gold cores and six Kryo Silver cores, along with an Adreno A12 GPU. To manage temperature during use, an active cooling system including a fan and heat pipe has been implemented.
The device will be marketed in two distinct configurations: one with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, or another with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB. Furthermore, it supports the addition of a microSD card with a capacity of up to 2 TB. In the controls, both analog sticks and triggers utilize Hall Effect sensors, a technology designed to mitigate common wear issues such as 'stick drift'. The analog sticks also feature configurable RGB lighting.
The RG 55G1 runs on Android 14 and comes bundled with RG Home, Anbernic's proprietary interface. This interface organizes games and allows mapping commands from titles originally made for touchscreens to physical buttons. Another notable feature is the ability to switch between Qualcomm's native graphics drivers and open-source Turnip Vulkan drivers, which can aid in optimizing performance in certain emulators.
Anbernic has also integrated artificial intelligence features into the system, such as real-time translation and text-based game guides. Regarding power, the battery has a capacity of 6,000 mAh, supports 18W charging, and promises up to eight hours of autonomy. The handheld also offers Wi-Fi 5 connectivity, Bluetooth 5.0, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The RG 55G1 will be available in black, retro gray, and indigo colors. During the promotional launch period, the 4 GB + 64 GB version will cost US$ 139.99, while the 8 GB + 128 GB model will be priced at US$ 164.99. After this initial offer, the prices will rise to US$ 149.99 and US$ 174.99, respectively. The manufacturer also offers packages that include microSD cards for extra costs. However, there is currently no official information regarding the price or availability of the RG 55G1 in Brazil.
