A senior company employee reported on Tuesday that Amazon Now's express commerce division intends to expand its operations to 300 cities across the country in the near future.
Nizant Sardana, Director of Amazon Now, told PTI that the company is developing rapidly and has a plan to expand to approximately 300 cities in the very near future. Amazon Now was launched in January 2025 and currently operates in about 30 cities.
Without specifying concrete timelines for reaching the 300-city goal, Sardana noted that the company is 'tripling' its efforts to achieve this goal as quickly as possible. Since its launch, Amazon Now has shown good results, demonstrating monthly growth of 20–25 percent.
He also mentioned that the entire express commerce market in the country is estimated at about $20 billion annually, although he did not comment on Amazon Now's share in this market. The company has invested 2,800 crore rupees, most of which was directed towards creating infrastructure and ensuring 'partner safety and well-being.'
Sardana explained that Amazon Now currently has 650 micro-fulfillment centers (MFCs), which will be increased to over 1000 in the near future. These MFCs are distributed across 30 cities. As part of its omnichannel strategy, the company will build some centers independently while utilizing partner stores to ensure faster delivery to customers.
In Hyderabad, Amazon Now has more than 50 MFCs, and after six months of operation in the city, the company has seen nearly 35 percent monthly growth. When asked about the timeline to reach the break-even point, given that many express commerce companies are not yet profitable, Sardana replied: 'I think this is just the beginning of this business. Currently, our focus is to provide the best assortment at the best price and have the ability to deliver parcels as quickly as possible. Profitability will come with time.' He added that, recalling Amazon's recent achievement of break-even in the country overall, he expressed confidence that Amazon Now would also reach this goal in the future.
Besides grocery products, in the Hyderabad market, according to Sardana, toys, pooja items, and fitness and exercise-related goods are 'overrepresented.' Sardana concluded that Amazon Now is capable of fast delivery due to the placement of fulfillment centers closer to customers, and delivery personnel are not pressured to adhere to specific time limits.
