Anti-mosquito coating tested in Colombia for water tanks to combat Dengue fever

Due to the increased risk of Dengue fever during the rainy season, caution is advised when handling water tanks and other containers. This is because the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits Dengue, actively breeds in stagnant clean water around residential areas. Scientists have developed a new method aimed at eliminating these insect breeding sites.

According to a new study, a special insecticide coating applied to water tanks can reduce the incidence of Dengue, with its effect lasting up to 12 months. Medical researchers from the University of Freiburg in Germany conducted a highly effective study in Colombia to prevent Dengue.

Study Objective

The main goal of this research was to halt Dengue infection by applying a special insecticide coating to habitats of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, such as water tanks and utensils. The results of this dual technology were published on August 19, 2026, in the renowned medical journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

45 Percent Reduction in Dengue Cases

Researchers conducted an experiment in 20 urban districts of Cucuta, Colombia. Approximately 1600–2000 households participated in each district. A special insecticide coating was applied to containers and tanks located near homes where there was a high probability of Aedes aegypti mosquito breeding.

After one year, it became evident that in the areas where the coating was applied, 337 cases of Dengue were registered per hundred thousand people. In contrast, in areas where no treatment was carried out, this figure stood at 529 cases per hundred thousand. Researchers noted that in the treated zones, the reduction in Dengue cases was 45% greater compared to control areas. Furthermore, a decrease in the number of mosquito larvae and pupae in homes was recorded.

Cost is About 170 Rupees Per Year

A feature of this method is its low cost. According to scientists, the direct cost of this treatment for one water tank is about 2 US dollars, equivalent to approximately 170 rupees per year. Microcapsules contained in the coating gradually release active chemical substances, ensuring long-lasting action over many months.

The coating contains two active components: one helps destroy adult mosquitoes and prevents them from laying eggs, while the second inhibits the development of mosquito larvae and pupae. Preliminary safety studies showed that water from treated containers poses no threat to human health.

Targeting Mosquito Breeding Sites

This technology is considered important for Dengue control because it targets breeding sites rather than flying insects. In Colombia, large basins and tanks used for washing are key breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti. Annually, 100 to 400 million people worldwide suffer from Dengue. Although most cases are mild, severe Dengue can be fatal.

Will This Technology Be Applicable in India?

The study results offer hope, but this technology cannot be immediately implemented in India as a home remedy. The types of mosquitoes, climate, water storage containers, and mosquito control systems differ between Colombia and India. Researchers also acknowledged that the results obtained in Colombia cannot be directly applied to other countries.

Before using this technology in India, trials in local conditions and approval from relevant authorities are necessary. Currently, the most important measures for Dengue prevention remain preventing water accumulation around the house, tightly sealing water tanks, and regularly cleaning coolers and other water containers.
