The first hours of a calf's life can have a long-term impact on its health, growth rate, and future productivity. Effective early management, starting from the quality of the cow's nutrition before calving and the speed at which newborns receive high-quality colostrum, remains the fundamental basis for successful meat and milk production.
To help farmers navigate this critical period, agricultural consultant and breeder Memparu Madiga and commercial cattle farmer Folisa Bidla presented key benchmarks for monitoring growth.
Success begins on day one. Each calf must be weighed at birth to establish an accurate baseline for subsequent liquid feeding and health programs. Producers must consider the big picture from the start. As Madiga notes: 'Without a good cow, it is impossible to get a quality calf at weaning. We need to go back to basics, where everything starts.'
Weight-based feeding: The volume of milk or milk replacer required by the calf directly depends on its physical mass. Regional guidelines, supported by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, mandate feeding the calf 8%–10% of its total body weight daily.
Target birth weight: According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development's Basic Meat Production Guide, the calf's birth weight must strictly be between 8% and 10% of the average cow's weight. By the time of weaning, calves should reach approximately 42% of the average cow's weight, assuming no supplementary feeding.
The golden standard for healthy neonatal development is the calf doubling its birth weight by 60 days. Bidla agrees with this timeframe, emphasizing that constantly measuring weight and closely observing the calf's behavior as it grows is crucial.
For medium-sized breeds, technical recommendations suggest producers aim for the following weight milestones: 0 to 4 weeks – 25 kg to 50 kg; 4 to 8 weeks – 50 kg to 75 kg. During this period, as Bidla points out, calves remain very vulnerable and sensitive because the rumen is not yet fully developed, making careful nutritional management vital.
From 8 to 16 weeks, the target weight is 75 kg to 140 kg.
While digital livestock scales are the most accurate tool, alternative methods can effectively track growth progress if equipment is limited on the farm. Digital scales provide the precise data needed to calculate Average Daily Gain (ADG) and accurately adjust rations. Meanwhile, a measuring tape wrapped around the calf's chest provides a reliable and inexpensive assessment of physical mass.
In intensive dairy breeding, calves should be weighed weekly to allow for individual ration adjustments based on growth response. However, even in extensive pasture-based beef breeding, Madiga notes that farmers should weigh the animals at least once a month to effectively track weight fluctuations and determine if the animal is gaining or losing weight.
Scales only show part of the picture. Successful producers use visual assessment to detect hidden health issues before they affect weight gain. Madiga asserts: 'You can easily see if an animal is responding positively just by looking at the condition of its coat, eyes, and overall health.'
A healthy calf is characterized by smooth, shiny coat, bright, clear eyes, and lively, curious behavior. Signs of distress include 'cherry eyes' (often caused by severe fly strike), reduced appetite, or dull, fluffy coat.
Signs of poor growth ('underfed' appearance): Calves delayed in receiving colostrum often fail to establish an immune base. Madiga observes that delayed colostrum intake weakens the milk reflex, allowing the system to absorb pathogens, which severely impacts health. Visually, such animals develop the classic 'pot belly' (or bloat) look, where the abdomen is abnormally enlarged while the chest and hindquarters remain thin and skeletal due to muscle atrophy.
Producers should never wean a calf solely by calendar date. A calf is ready to transition to solid food only when its complex gastrointestinal system is sufficiently developed. Madiga emphasizes that by six weeks, the rumen develops enough so the calf can efficiently digest solid feed.
To facilitate this transition, Bidla advises starting supplemental feeding 30–40 days before weaning to fill nutritional gaps and reduce weaning stress. Madiga adds that offering a highly energetic, very palatable starter feed serves as a form of comfortable nutrition, helping to smoothly manage the transition.
For dairy calves, technical recommendations indicate that milk can safely be discontinued when the calf consistently consumes about 0.4–0.5 kg of tasty, high-energy starter mix per day.
For beef calves, solid feed is usually introduced between 2 and 4 months of age, as mother's milk alone is insufficient to meet the calf's overall energy requirements.
The 50% Rule: Many extensive beef breeders aim to wean calves based on the mother's size. As Madiga shares from his experience: 'When the calf reaches about 40%–50% of the mother's weight, we wean them.'
Adhering to this balance protects both animals: keeping the calf near the mother during the transition helps it cope with weaning stress, whereas abrupt, premature separation without an energy buffer causes serious growth retardation.
