The month of August was quite positive for the Indian car market, with consumers purchasing a large number of vehicles. Maruti Suzuki maintained its position as the largest car manufacturer, as the company's sales figure crossed 2.19 lakh units in one month. This indicates a significant increase of 21.3 percent compared to last year.
The main reason for this sharp growth was not the small cars, but the SUV and MPV segments. A strong jump of 46.3 percent in utility vehicle sales made it clear that customers are now prioritizing Maruti's larger vehicle portfolio. Due to this trend, the company successfully completed the sale of 11.43 lakh vehicles in just five months of the financial year 2026-27.
Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 2,19,220 vehicles in August 2026. This number is 21.3 percent higher than the 1,80,683 units sold in August of last year. In terms of domestic sales, the company sold a total of 1,80,078 vehicles within the country. Additionally, 5,298 cars were transferred to other auto companies, while 33,844 vehicles were exported to other countries, bringing the total sales to 2,19,220 units.
Good progress was also seen in the sales of Maruti Suzuki's mini, compact, and mid-size category cars. The combined sales of these three segments in August were 85,965 units, compared to 66,450 units in August 2025, showing an annual growth of 29.4%. The mini segment includes cars like Maruti Alto, S-Presso, and Celerio; their sales increased to 8,799 units in August 2026, up from 6,853 units in the same month a year ago. In the compact segment, a total of 77,166 units of cars like Baleno, Ciaz, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR were sold, which is more than the 59,597 units sold in August last year.
The most encouraging news for Maruti came from the utility vehicle segment. The total sales of vehicles like Brezza, Ertiga, E-Vitara, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invictus, Jimny, Victoris, and XL 6 were 79,045 units. This is significantly higher than the 54,043 units sold in August last year, indicating a fantastic annual growth of 46.3 percent in the utility vehicle segment.
Furthermore, Maruti Suzuki sold 11,961 units of its popular van, Maruti Eeco, which is more than the 10,785 units sold in August last year. Similarly, the sales of the Super Carry light commercial vehicle increased from 2,772 units to 3,107 units. Combining passenger vehicles and LCVs, Maruti's total domestic sales in August 2026 were 1,80,078 units, which is 34.3 percent higher than the 1,34,050 units recorded last year.
