Significant measures have been taken by both the central government and the Delhi government to stabilize rising onion prices in the capital. Delhi Governor, Reha Gupta, announced on Tuesday that the central government will provide the city with 1000 metric tons of onions.
These onions will be sold to Delhi residents at a subsidized price of 35 rupees per kilogram. According to information from the governor's office, the sale of onions at reduced prices will take place in all 13 districts of the city through affordable stores and special mobile vans.
Governor Reha Gupta explained that the purpose of using mobile vans is to ensure easy access to inexpensive onions even in areas and colonies where people might find it difficult to reach regular affordable stores.
Previously, due to heavy rains in recent weeks, the onion harvest in several regions of the country was affected, which negatively impacted supplies. As a result, onion prices in Delhi retail markets reached 50-60 rupees per kilogram.
The Delhi government decided to directly procure onions and provide them at subsidized prices to ease the burden of inflation on the population.
Governor Reha Gupta assured that her government would not allow a shortage of onions or other essential goods in the capital under any circumstances. The government's main task is to maintain sufficient availability of vital products for Delhi residents and ensure they are available at reasonable prices.
The governor also reported that the Delhi government is constantly monitoring the availability of onions and market prices in the capital to prevent any kind of shortage.
