As the virus constantly mutates, the vaccine is also updated in accordance with these changes to reduce the number of flu cases and decrease the need for hospitalization. This virus actively spread across many countries worldwide last year, leading to concerns about a rise in future cases, which prompted the advance update of the vaccine.
A completely new flu vaccine was not created; instead, the existing one was updated to account for the new strain. For the 2026-27 season in the UK, an AstraZeneca flu vaccine was prepared. This vaccine is intended for children and adolescents and is a live attenuated influenza vaccine that provides protection against three different strains of viruses or bacteria in a single dose.
The updated vaccine is used as part of the flu vaccination program in the UK for 2026-27. According to the NHS, vaccination for certain groups, including pregnant women, began on September 1, 2026, while for most eligible individuals, it will be available from October 1, 2026. The vaccine is administered in both vaccination centers and hospitals. Special provisions are made for children: children from two years old up to school age usually receive a nasal flu spray. For children who cannot receive the nasal spray, there is an alternative option—an injectable vaccine.
According to epidemiologist Dr. Jugal Kishor, the flu vaccination program in the UK for 2026-27 is not directly applicable to India. Availability, brand, season, and public health policy regarding flu vaccination in India may differ. Nevertheless, WHO recommendations on viral strains serve as an important basis for all vaccine manufacturers globally. Therefore, to determine whether the H3N2 component is included in the vaccine package available in India, one must examine its composition rather than relying solely on information about the vaccine update.
