Hardik Pandya's return to international cricket is facing difficulties once again. He sustained a minor leg injury during training at the Centre of Excellence (CoE). This new issue raises questions about his participation in the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan.
According to a report by the Times of India, Hardik was on track for a comeback and was training intensively. However, after the leg problem arose, he was advised to temporarily stop bowling.
Information available suggests that Hardik will be able to resume bowling soon. Nevertheless, achieving the required level of physical fitness for the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, starting on September 13th in Delhi, may prove to be a challenging task.
A source familiar with the situation reported that Hardik was not experiencing any serious issues with batting or movement during training. But his return plan was affected by the leg discomfort.
His situation will only become clear after receiving full clearance from the CoE's medical and fitness team. The Centre of Excellence wants to ensure his complete readiness before including him in the team.
The selection of the Indian team for the T20I series against Afghanistan is expected this week, and selectors may hold a meeting in Delhi. During this meeting, they will also receive updates on the health status of players recovering in Bangalore. Thus, Hardik's current injury has come at an inopportune time. If he cannot reach the necessary form in time, he may have to miss the three-match series against Afghanistan.
Hardik Pandya has not participated in any competitive matches since May 24th, when he played his last match for Mumbai Indians in the IPL. He has not featured in any competitions since then. His last match for India was on March 8th in the T20 World Cup final. After that, he was unable to participate in the home white-ball series against Afghanistan, nor did he play in the tours in Ireland and England. This means his distance from international cricket has been constantly increasing, and the current injury could set him back further in his return journey.
Before the ODI series against Afghanistan, Hardik had also faced injury problems. At that time, there were reports of a low-grade strain (minor injury) in his quadriceps (thigh muscles). Before this injury, Hardik was fully healthy and training actively. It was believed that he was gradually preparing for a return to international cricket, but the injury once again impacted his plans. Attention is now once more focused on his physical condition due to the new leg issue.
There is also good news for the Indian team ahead of the series against Afghanistan. All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar are recovering well and are expected to be available for the series. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah's participation in these three matches is yet to be decided. This means selectors have several important decisions to make regarding the squad composition. The main question for Hardik right now is how quickly he can resume bowling and when he will receive 'fully fit' clearance from the CoE. Since there is little time left until the selection for the Afghanistan series, the picture of his return may become clearer soon.
