Fulfilling the bond of seven vows, 55-year-old Meena Gupta gave her husband Krishnakant Gupta the gift of life. When 60-year-old Krishnakant Gupta's both kidneys failed and he required a kidney transplant, Meena decided to donate her organ without hesitation. Her determination was that she would 'not let anything happen to her marital life until her last breath.'
This incident marked an important day in the medical history of the Gwalior-Chambal division on August 30th. The first successful kidney transplant was performed at the Super Speciality Hospital of Gajraraja Medical College, where wife Meena donated her kidney to husband Krishnakant.
Krishnakant Gupta, a resident of Chhatarpur, had both his kidneys fail. After obtaining the family's consent, his wife Meena Gupta expressed her wish to donate a kidney to him. Subsequently, detailed medical examinations, consultations, compatibility tests, and other necessary procedures related to the transplant were completed for both the patient and the donor.
After all formalities were completed, both individuals were admitted to the Super Speciality Hospital on August 29th.
The complex procedure of the kidney transplant began around 8:30 AM on Sunday morning. A team of specialists conducted the operation with the support of Dr. Vikas Jain, Head of Urology and Kidney Transplant Department at Manipal Hospital, under the leadership of the Nephrology, Anesthesia, and Urology departments of the Super Speciality Hospital.
The complex surgery, which lasted for about six and a half hours, concluded around 3 PM. During this time, the specialist team continuously monitored the condition of both the patient and the donor. According to the hospital management, the entire process was completed according to the prescribed protocol, and no major complications arose.
Post-transplant, the health condition of both the patient Krishnakant Gupta and his wife Meena Gupta is stable, and the team of doctors is continuously taking care of them.
Krishnakant Gupta's kidney transplant was performed free of charge under the Ayushman Yojana. This initiative has paved the way for the availability of advanced organ transplant facilities in government hospitals for economically weaker patients. The family expressed gratitude to the entire hospital team and the government health schemes.
To prevent infection, a separate ICU has been arranged for Krishnakant Gupta at the Super Speciality Hospital. Although the hospital has a centralized AC system, an additional AC unit has been installed in the transplant patient's ICU to minimize the risk of infection. No person other than doctors and authorized medical staff will be allowed entry into the patient's room. He will be kept under the special care of physicians from the Medicine, Nephrology, and Anesthesia departments for seven days, for which round-the-clock doctor duty has been assigned.
Sumit Kanakne, Krishnakant Gupta's son, stated that there were no problems during the transplant and the entire operation was done under the Ayushman Yojana. Sumit thanked the Dean of the college, Prof. Dr. R.K.S. Dhakad, Dr. Shivam Yadav, and Dr. Ankit Sharma, saying that this transplant in Gwalior was possible only due to their tireless efforts.
Dean Prof. Dr. RKS Dhakad commented that the first kidney transplant at the Super Speciality Hospital is a significant achievement for Gajraraja Medical College and the entire Gwalior-Chambal region.
Dr. Vikas Jain of Manipal Hospital mentioned that he and his team came from Delhi and successfully completed the entire process. He praised the staff of the Super Speciality Hospital, stating that during the work, they did not feel like they were working in a new setup for the first time.
The entire medical team played a crucial role in this successful transplant, including Dr. Nilima Tandon, Dr. Prashant Srivastava, Dr. Shivam Yadav, Dr. Ankit Sharma, Dr. Seema Shinde, Dr. Jindal, Dr. Namrata Jain, Dr. Kushal, transplant coordinator Kavita, and Rahul.
