Serra da Canastra is one of the most popular destinations for ecotourism in the country, yet it still retains little-known corners with good trails and waterfalls. One such place is Vale da Guriata, located 35 kilometers from the city of Delfinópolis.
Access to this area is via an unpaved road, so using high-clearance transport (4x4) is especially recommended, particularly during the rainy season. A jeep tour option is also available for traversing the waterfall routes.
The best time for hiking and visiting the waterfalls is from April to October. Nevertheless, hiring a local guide is strongly advised year-round.
Vale da Guriata features three main waterfalls. Maria Concebida Waterfall, located about 22 km from the center of Delfinópolis and serving as the source of the Babilínia River, is situated on the Águas Quentes Farm, known for its thermal waters reaching up to 30°C.
Zé Carlinhos Waterfall, approximately 33 km from Delfinópolis, is considered one of the most famous tourist attractions in the valley. A circular pool surrounded by local vegetation has formed around this waterfall.
Finally, Ouro Waterfall, also located about 33 km from Delfinópolis, is a complex of three waterfalls. This area is well-equipped and offers visitors dining, lodging, and camping services.
In addition to hiking and viewing the waterfalls, visiting Vale da Guriata means not missing out on tasting local cheeses. Canastra Vale da Guriata cheese is internationally recognized as one of the best in Brazil: it received a bronze medal at the Queijo Brasil 2017 award, as well as silver medals (2017) and Super Gold (2019) at the Concours Mondial du Fromage competition in France.
The uniqueness of the regional production is due to milk from Caracú and Girondino breeds. The milk from these animals has a higher fat content, which gives the cheese a unique flavor. During aging, it develops a golden color covered with a white mold layer, which imparts a characteristic taste to the cheese.
