Every person's career path is unique. Sometimes success comes with less effort, and sometimes, despite great efforts, a person falls behind. One user on the social network Reddit shared his experience, recounting how he obtained a bachelor's degree from a tertiary college while having 11 academic failures, and now works as a senior engineer at an American company with an annual package of around 50 lakhs.
This engineer reported that he graduated from the tertiary college, and until the last year, he had 11 subjects outstanding. Nevertheless, he did not let his weak academic record become a barrier in his career. He gained industry experience parallel to his work and focused on passing the remaining exams.
In his post, he mentioned that he managed to pass six of his academic failures in the final semester. After graduating, he started working as an embedded systems developer in a small startup in Lucknow, where his monthly salary was 8,000 rupees. At that time, his priority was gaining experience and mastering something new, rather than earning money.
While working in this position, he continued to prepare for the remaining exams. Approximately six months later, he successfully passed all five remaining exams and finally received his degree in 2022.
During 11 months of work at the startup, he worked on embedded systems, including device driver development, using Yocto, developing customized OS, and device firmware. Making the first major step in his career, he moved to a prestigious company in Hyderabad, where his annual income was about 6 lakhs. Initially, he was hired for a role related to embedded systems, but due to project and client needs, he began working in cybersecurity. Meanwhile, his interest in embedded systems and Linux remained.
For career growth, he moved to Bangalore and joined a large global technology company dealing with televisions and game consoles, with an annual package of about 8 lakhs. Over the next three and a half years, he continuously studied new things and worked on engineering tasks. Thanks to accumulated experience and salary growth, his package increased to approximately 12 lakhs per year. Then, he returned to Hyderabad and started working at a Korean automotive company through an Indian multinational corporation with an annual package of about 20 lakhs.
However, after a few months, he felt that there were not enough opportunities for technical learning in that job, so he decided to change jobs after only four months. After that, he started working as a senior engineer at an American company, where his annual package reached approximately 50 lakhs.
In his post, the engineer emphasized that looking back, academic failures, low starting salary, or wrong career decisions do not define a person's future. He highlighted the importance of continuous learning, hard work, thoughtful risk-taking, and continuous self-improvement.
