Four young experts from Iran presented the country's perspective at the 8th BRICS Youth Energy Summit, which was held online on August 17 in India under the slogan 'Energy for All'. These experts represented the Organization for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SATBA).
According to an IRNA report, the participants highlighted Iran's positions in three key areas: ensuring energy security and sustainability, energy accessibility and equity, and technology and innovation.
Student Participation in Specialized Panels
Three students from the Scientific Society of Energy Mechanical Engineering at Amirkabir University—Mahan Ahmadi-Rahmatabadi (PhD candidate in energy), Armiya Rakhshani (PhD candidate in energy economics), and Ghisu Kouhbar (undergraduate student in energy mechanical engineering)—actively participated in specialized sessions. They discussed energy portfolio diversification, supply chain resilience, renewable energy development, the role of hydrogen and new technologies, as well as digitalization and the application of artificial intelligence in power grids, sharing their experience with international colleagues and demonstrating the scientific capabilities of Iranian students.
The presence of these young specialists helped create a network connecting Iranian professionals with experts from BRICS member countries, including China, India, Russia, Brazil, and the UAE. This opens prospects for strengthening future specialized interactions, developing joint research projects, and technology transfer.
Furthermore, this event underscored the successful link between the university as a knowledge generation center and energy diplomacy, which serves as a tool of the country's soft power.
Main Themes of the Summit
The eighth summit focused on youth participation in energy cooperation and gathered over one hundred participants from academic circles, government institutions, and energy ministries of BRICS countries. The main discussion topics included:
- Energy Security and Sustainability: sustainable energy systems, source diversification, supply chain stability, grid modernization, and energy storage systems.
- Energy Accessibility and Equity: universal access to energy, clean food preparation, affordable financing, capacity building, and support for developing economies.
- Technology and Innovation: smart grids, hydrogen, digitalization, artificial intelligence, biofuels, carbon capture, and energy efficiency.
CPDI Works to Improve Iran's Scientific and Technical Cooperation with BRICS
In June, the Center for Progress and Development of Iran (CPDI) prepared a report illustrating Iran's participation in scientific and technical and innovative cooperation within BRICS, as well as strategic opportunities and necessary steps to strengthen the country's role in this area.
BRICS, having become one of the most important forces in the international system in recent years, has invested significant resources in science, technology, and innovation, in addition to economic and political interaction. This bloc has now transformed into one of the largest networks for scientific cooperation in developing countries, utilizing 14 specialized working groups and dozens of joint scientific and technological programs.
CPDI acts as the coordination center for Iran's technological and scientific interaction with BRICS. It is responsible for accompanying the country's representatives, analyzing special documents, providing technical consultation, and establishing links between domestic institutions and specialized BRICS structures.
According to the report, 2025 can be considered a starting point for Iran's participation in the scientific and technological and innovative structure of BRICS. This allowed the country to demonstrate its potential in science and technology, laying the foundation for active participation in joint projects in the future and strengthening its position in scientific and technical cooperation.
In 2025, the country actively participated in technical and specialized BRICS meetings on various scientific fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, neuroscience, oceanography, geospatial information technology, astronomy, photonics, nanotechnology, materials science, social and humanities sciences, and research infrastructure.
One of the main focuses of BRICS activities in 2025 was the development of joint research projects among member states in fields such as AI, healthcare, clean energy, food security, quantum technologies, data science, and advanced materials. Iran's membership in this network will provide researchers and scientists with an excellent opportunity to participate in international projects.
