Jetour has adjusted the payload rating for its T1 and T2 models, setting a new figure of 475 kg. These changes occurred after the initially stated figures raised questions from the public.
The T series SUVs from Jetour quickly gained popularity after their launch in South Africa in 2025. The T2 model is particularly notable, having received the title of official car of the year in the country in early 2026.
However, there were disputes surrounding the load capacity of the T1 and T2 models. Previously, figures ranging from 300 kg to 375 kg were cited, depending on the model and calculation method, which seemed unusually low for a mid-sized five-seater SUV. It was noted that these values could easily be exceeded with five passengers, not including luggage.
Jetour has now officially changed the payload for the T1 and T2 to 475 kg. The company explained this by stating that it conducted negotiations with its head office as well as with the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS).
Interestingly, no changes were made to the mechanical, structural, or component parts of the vehicles to achieve the increased payload. Consequently, the new rating is theoretically applicable to existing T1 and T2 models covered by the relevant NRCS approval.
Jetour reported that it is currently in dialogue with the relevant local licensing authorities regarding the increased payload rating for already operating vehicles.
In its statement, the company noted: 'Jetour South Africa directly interacted with the Jetour Head Office and NRCS regarding the approved payload applicable to the T1 and T2 models.' The company further confirmed: 'Based on the approval obtained from NRCS, Jetour South Africa confirms that the approved payload applicable to the corresponding range of Jetour T1 and T2 models is 475 kg, including the driver.'
