Apple is concluding a significant chapter in its journey this Monday, the 31st. Tim Cook, the company's current chief executive officer, will step down after nearly fifteen years leading the organization. His successor will be John Ternus, who currently holds the position of head of hardware engineering.
Starting September 1st, Cook will take on the role of executive chairman, while Ternus will begin serving as CEO and will also join the company's board of directors. In April of this year, when the change was announced, the technology giant stated that Cook would remain CEO during the Northern Hemisphere summer to ensure a gradual handover to his new successor.
This change represents the first leadership transition since 2011, the year Cook took over Apple's direction, succeeding Steve Jobs shortly before the founder's passing. With the appointment, Ternus becomes the eighth CEO in the company's history.
In a statement, Cook reflected on his journey at the company, stating: 'It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have had the trust to lead such an extraordinary company.' He added: 'I love Apple with all my heart and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a team of people so ingenious, innovative, creative, and deeply attentive, who remained steadfast in their dedication to enriching our customers' lives and creating the best products and services in the world.'
His predecessor, John Ternus, is a senior vice president of hardware engineering and has twenty-five years with Apple. He joined the company four years after completing his mechanical engineering studies at the University of Pennsylvania in the USA and was seen as the leading candidate for succession.
In the hardware division, Ternus supervised teams responsible for developing various products, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, and Vision Pro. In his announcement, Ternus expressed gratitude: 'I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to continue Apple's mission.' He mentioned having been fortunate to work with Steve Jobs and to have Tim Cook as a mentor, describing it as a privilege to help shape products and experiences that transformed human interaction with the world. Ternus expressed optimism for the coming years and honor in taking on the role, promising to lead with the values established by the company half a century ago.
The new administration takes over the company amid considerable challenges, such as an increasingly complex supply chain, geopolitical tensions, tariffs imposed during Donald Trump's term, and RAM memory shortages due to high demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips.
With this transition, Apple aims to preserve the continuity of its strategy while preparing to navigate a more complex global landscape.
