Aurobindo Pharma enters US inhaler market with Advair generic

Aurobindo Pharma has entered the United States inhaler market by introducing a generic version of GSK's Advair Diskus. This move signifies an expansion of the company's portfolio of complex generics beyond traditional solid oral forms.

On Monday, the company launched the generic equivalent of Advair Diskus in the US, which contains fluticasone propionate and salmeterol as an inhaled powder. The drug is available in concentrations of 100/50 mcg and 250/50 mcg and is intended for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.

For Aurobindo Pharma, the significance of this launch goes beyond the commercialization of a single product; it is the first inhaler from the company's portfolio to reach the US market. It provides the company with a foothold in a segment where development and manufacturing are more complex than producing standard generics.

Inhaler products require specialized capabilities in formulation development, devices, and manufacturing, as well as expert knowledge in regulatory affairs. This makes entry into this segment relatively more difficult, but it offers generic manufacturers the opportunity to build differentiated portfolios and potentially reduce dependence on highly commoditized products.

Aurobindo has stated that it is developing many other inhaler products, and the launch of Advair reflects its commitment to expanding its range of complex and distinctive inhalation medicines. This step is also part of the company's broader efforts to strengthen its business in the US through complex generics.

The company possesses significant infrastructure for production and research, including over 30 manufacturing and packaging sites approved by major global regulatory bodies, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA). Although the US is a key market for Indian generic manufacturers, price pressure and high competition in traditional generics are prompting companies to move towards more complex products, where development barriers are higher and competition is comparatively limited.

Establishing an inhaler portfolio can help Aurobindo diversify its product offering in the US and establish a long-term stream of differentiated goods.
