Vice President Mashatile Recovers After Minor Surgery

According to current press secretary Keith Khoza, Vice President Paul Mashatile is recovering well after undergoing a minor surgical procedure and continues to stay in touch with his office during his recovery.

Vice President Paul Mashatile's office issued a statement to reassure the public regarding his health condition, refuting rumors that surfaced over the weekend. These reports emerged amid his absence from public events.

According to Sunday World, sources circulated unconfirmed information about intensive care treatment and possible poisoning.

Keith Khoza reported that the Vice President felt unwell at home in Johannesburg and sought medical attention under the supervision of his medical team. He specified: 'He was hospitalized for a minor surgical procedure and observation, after which he was discharged, and he continues to receive proper medical care and rest.'

Khoza also noted that the Vice President's schedule and official duties continued to be managed during his recovery period. 'The Vice President participated in Parliament and took part in other important meetings related to his work via virtual platforms.'

Privacy Regarding Health Matters

Mashatile, who is also the ANC Vice President leading the Government of National Unity (GNU), missed some public engagements while recovering. His office declined to provide further details on the nature of his illness or the procedure itself.

The office emphasized respect for the Vice President's right to medical confidentiality and therefore would not comment on speculative or unverified claims. 'We urge the public and the media to rely on information released through official channels, rather than speculation or anonymous sources,' Khoza added. He also expressed gratitude for the messages of support and well wishes, noting that the Vice President intends to resume his full schedule of official engagements in consultation with his medical team.

Previous Health Incident

Mashatile's last absence followed a health incident in September 2024. At that time, he was taken to the hospital after losing consciousness on stage during the N'wamitwa Day celebration at Waloyi Cultural Village in Greater Tzaneen District, Limpopo province.

Khoza stated that 'while delivering his keynote address, the Vice President felt dizzy due to the heat and was assisted by his medical team.' He confirmed: 'We can confirm that the Vice President received the necessary medical attention and is fine.'

Mashatile was chairing the Presidential Special Group and speaking about traditional and Khoisan leaders. SABC News reported that the then Limpopo Premier, Dr. Fophie Ramatuba, stated that Mashatile was fine after the fainting spell and urged the public not to worry. The state broadcaster suggested that heat exhaustion might have been the cause of the incident. Mashatile was moved off the podium by security personnel and emergency services. The state broadcaster did not immediately report where he was taken for treatment.
