Mamelodi Sundowns managed a dramatic comeback, defeating Golden Arrows 3-2 in a match that allowed them to qualify for the MTN8 final on the away goals rule, despite the aggregate score being level at 3-3.
Antonio Van Wyk, coming off the bench, became a key figure in turning the semi-final around. The Mamelodi Sundowns team managed to recover after previously losing 1-0 in the first match. The aggregate draw was achieved thanks to a goal from Cassius Mailula in the 31st minute.
Despite strong pressure from the home fans, and Junior Dion restoring Arrows' lead in the second half, it was Van Wyk who became the unexpected hero for the African champions.
Sundowns continued to apply pressure after the break. They even thought they had scored a second goal when Ndamane Khulumani shot at the Arrows' goal following a deflected cross by Favaaz Basadien, but this goal was disallowed due to a handball. Despite relentless pressure on Abafana Bes'tende, the team remained dangerous on counterattacks.
During one of Arrows' rare attacks, a fantastic cross from Ronaldo van Niel was lost, and goalkeeper Takasani Mbandjwa kept the team in the game with another superb save. Finally, in the 69th minute, the home fans erupted when Dion powerfully struck the goal after excellent work from van Niel on the left. Arrows then needed to hold out for about 20 minutes to reach their first MTN8 final since 2009, and they tightly closed down space in front of the ball.
Van Wyk transforms from assistant to scorer
The Sundowns substitute provided the team with the necessary momentum in the 77th minute, sending a dangerous cross into the box that the Arrows' defense could not clear. Marcelo Allende took advantage of the loose ball to put Sundowns ahead 2-1 in this match and equalize the aggregate score. Arrows suddenly started to hold firm, as Sundowns could now play in the final against Orlando Pirates if the home side could pull off another feat.
However, the decisive blow came from Van Wyk. The substitute changed his role from provider to goalscorer in the 85th minute, firing a long-range shot that went under the jumping Mbandjwa and hit the net, increasing Sundowns' lead to 3-1 in the current match. Arrows managed to respond in the 90th minute through Fumalani Humalo, but the damage was already done.
This late goal gave hope to the home fans, but Sundowns maintained their advantage, concluding the dramatic turn and securing their place in the MTN8 final. After all the resilience of Arrows and all hopes for a debut in the final after 17 years, their slight advantage in the first match disappeared. Meanwhile, Sundowns demonstrated championship qualities—they kept pressing until the breakthrough occurred, and then securely shut down the opponent's chances.
