Storm Karina has evolved into a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean, but its center remains at sea, posing no immediate risk to land.
According to the National Hurricane Center, based in Miami, Karina registered winds of 130 kilometers per hour, classifying it as a Category 1 hurricane. It is important to note that a hurricane classified as major must reach Category 3 or higher.
At the moment, the storm was located 1,325 kilometers southwest of the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, Mexico, and was moving northwest at a speed of 24 kilometers per hour, following a projected path that will lead it further into the Pacific.
Although the initial projection indicated that Karina would remain far from the coast, the hurricane tracking center warned that the waves generated by the storm could cause dangerous sea conditions and rip currents in certain areas of southwestern Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula.
In another region of the Pacific, Storm Lowell was observed southeast of Hawaii, posing no danger to land areas.
Additionally, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration anticipated an below-average hurricane season, attributing this to the El Niño phenomenon. The forecast points to the occurrence of eight to 14 named storms, three to six of which should reach hurricane strength, and one to three of them may reach major hurricane intensity.
