Tshepo Tshite wins Hollywoodbets Durban 10K race with powerful final sprint

Tshepo Tshite won the Hollywoodbets Durban 10K race by executing a dramatic final sprint that allowed him to overtake Kenyan Steven Kangete in the final stages at Kingsmead Stadium.

Tshite finished the race with an impressive performance, winning the Hollywoodbets Durban 10K in a time of 28:18. He utilized speed, which made him the fastest runner in South Africa over the 1500m distance, to pass Steven Kangete. Although Kangete entered the stadium ahead and seemed to have secured the victory, Tshite, who is a representative of the Olympics and World Championships in middle distances, employed a devastating final acceleration on the track to pull away from the Kenyan and win by a margin of three seconds.

This victory highlighted Tshite's growing potential in the 10km distance. Earlier this year, he took third place in the Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K in March, narrowly avoiding the 28-minute barrier, and his performance on Sunday further demonstrated his capabilities over longer distances.

During the post-race press conference, Tshite stated: 'I know I am capable of running something, but the most important thing is learning to run 10km. Remember, roads and tracks are not the same. I come from 800m and am trying to transition to 1500m, so for now, it all comes down to learning this distance.' The time of 28:18 was achieved in windy conditions, which, according to Tshite, repeatedly hindered his attempts to run 10km quickly.

Nevertheless, Tshite's ambitions extend beyond road racing. He plans to move to the 5000m distance and believes that developing his endurance over 10km will make him even more dangerous in shorter distances. He noted: 'I need to run 5000m. I know that the faster I run 10km, the better my 5000m will be because I already know I have a speed advantage.'

Kangete, participating in South Africa for the first time, finished second after making a decisive maneuver upon entering the stadium. He commented: 'The race was good; I ran my best,' acknowledging the difficult conditions and the strong challenge from the South Africans.

Tshite thanked his training, discipline, and the help of long-distance specialist Stephen Mokoka, as he continues to adapt to the demands of longer races. This victory marked another significant milestone in his transition from a middle-distance specialist to an increasingly formidable road runner.

In the women's race, Tayla Kavanagh won with a course record of 31:39, despite a serious fall at the 3km mark. Meanwhile, Kabelo Mulaudzi managed to climb onto the podium this year, taking third place with a time of 28:28. Tayla Kavanagh defeated her teammate from Hollywood Athletics Club, Neheng Khatala, for second place by a margin of 22 seconds. Third place was taken by Karabo Mailulu from Boxer Athletics Club, trailing Khatala by a full minute.
