The Iranian women's national volleyball team secured fourth place at the AVC Asian Championship 2026. This was achieved after losing the third-place match to Japan, which ended in three sets with scores of 25–21, 25–16, 26–24.
Japan won this match, earning a bronze medal and once again finishing third in Asia, a position they also held in 2023. Furthermore, this result allowed Japan to qualify for the 2027 FIVB Women's World Volleyball Championship.
Ranking sixth in the world, Japan is one of the most decorated teams in international women's volleyball. Throughout its history, the team has participated in 14 Olympic Games, winning gold medals in the Tokyo Games in 1964 and in Montreal in 1976. Japan has also competed in 18 World Championships, winning the title in 1962, 1967, and 1974.
The tournament final will determine the Asian champion, featuring China against Thailand, and will also award the sole slot for participation in the Olympic Games.
For Iran, fourth place represents a significant achievement in the development of women's volleyball. A project aimed at developing the women's volleyball team was launched in 2024 with the ambitious goal of reaching the top four in Asia by 2026. As part of this project, the Iranian Volleyball Federation, led by President Milad Taghavi, hired coach Lee Do-hee from South Korea and directed targeted investments into the women's national team.
Thanks to this project, noticeable progress has already been made in Iran's world ranking. The Iranian women's national volleyball team has risen to 40th place in the world for the first time in its history, reflecting the growing investment and development of women's sports in the country.
