The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the launch of a major new road corridor in Dubai, designed to ease traffic and improve connectivity between the emirate's rapidly growing residential and developing areas. RTA awarded two contracts totaling 1.161 billion dirhams for the implementation of the Al Maidan Street Development Project.
This project, scheduled for completion by the end of 2028, involves modernizing key intersections along Al Maidan Street. The scope of work includes the construction of 3.7 km of bridges and 17 km of roads, as well as the addition of bicycle lanes integrated into Dubai's existing cycling network.
The infrastructure improvements will benefit communities with a combined population exceeding 500,000 people. These areas include Dubai Hills, Nad Al Sheba, Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens, Dubai District One, and Al Barari.
RTA stated that the works are divided into two contracts to accelerate construction while ensuring full integration of all components. These road enhancements are expected to significantly impact travel across Dubai, particularly through the creation of an alternative route near Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Hail Road.
Matar Al Tayer, CEO and Chairman of the RTA Executive Council, emphasized that the authority is adopting a proactive approach to expanding Dubai's road network to align with the emirate's economic and demographic growth. He stated that RTA follows a proactive approach to planning and execution, focusing on creating an integrated and highly efficient road network that matches urban, population, and economic growth, ensuring high traffic flow and mobility flexibility.
The new corridor will increase the capacity of north-south transport arteries by 18 percent. Furthermore, a significant reduction in travel time is anticipated on the key route between Al Manama Street and the Dubai-Al Ain Road and Umm Suqeim Street.
Al Tayer specified that the project will reduce this journey from 30 minutes to 10 minutes, representing a 66 percent decrease in travel time. He noted that Al Maidan Street is one of Dubai's most vital strategic arteries, running parallel to and supporting Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Hail Road.
