In Sangrur, Punjab, farmers have launched a large-scale protest against the alleged trade deal between India and the USA. Hundreds of farmers arrived on their tractor-trailers and took positions, blocking two main routes, preparing for a prolonged sit-in protest.
The farmers equipped their trailers for living and sustenance: mats were laid inside, food supplies were provided, stoves, fans, and in some cases even air conditioners were installed. Such meticulous preparation indicates the farmers' intention to remain in place for a long period.
The main reason for this protest is the proposed trade deal between India and the USA, which the farmers consider a serious threat to their income. Additionally, demands are actively being put forward for the complete cancellation of debts owed by farmers and workers, a legal guarantee of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for agricultural crops, and the implementation of a new agricultural policy. The farmers are fighting for the realization of 13 key demands, including land acquisition issues.
This protest front is organized under the leadership of the Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta Ugrahan. The organization has stated that the strike will continue indefinitely until concrete agreements on their demands are reached. The farmers' readiness for a long stay is evident from their preparations, as the tractor-trailers have become not just means of transport, but a full-fledged camp site for the protest.
Attention is now focused on the dialogue between the administration and the farmers. Currently, the cluster of tractor-trailers near the office of the Deputy District Magistrate in Sangrur indicates that the farmers are fully prepared to extend this protest.
