Vaibhav Suryavanshi has reached another significant milestone in his cricket career at the young age of just 15. During the semi-final match of the Duleep Trophy on August 30 (Sunday), while playing against the Central Zone, this young batsman was suddenly required to take charge of the East Zone. Initially, he played as the vice-captain, but after regular captain Ishan Kishan suffered an injury and was forced off the field, the responsibility for the team fell upon him. This marked his first captaincy in senior men's cricket.
This match was being held at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) Ground-1 in Bengaluru. Ishan was wicketkeeping on the first day when he sustained an injury to his right wrist. The physio treated him on the spot, but he was taken off the field for further examination. It was during this time that Vaibhav took over the captaincy. Later, after returning with his hand bandaged, Ishan did not keep wicket, and Kumar Kushagra took over that responsibility.
East Zone had appointed Vaibhav Suryavanshi as the vice-captain for the Duleep Trophy. His appointment was questioned at the time, but the selection committee clarified that this decision was made not just for the current team composition but also keeping the young player's future in mind. Manish Vardhan, a selector from Jharkhand and a member of the East Zone selection committee, had also stated that the team was not planning based only on immediate needs. However, circumstances soon arose where Vaibhav had to shoulder the leadership responsibility.
Vaibhav's first-class statistics are not particularly impressive. He began his first-class career through the Ranji Trophy at the start of 2024. So far, he has scored 215 runs in nine first-class matches, averaging 16.53, and has also scored a half-century. In this context, leading a senior team despite such young age and limited experience is a major challenge for him.
In the tournament's first match against the North East Zone, Vaibhav Suryavanshi managed only 8 runs with the bat, although he contributed to the team by taking two wickets with the ball. East Zone won that match by an innings and 210 runs. Now, his role in the semi-final has become much more crucial.
The rapid way Vaibhav Suryavanshi has made his mark in recent months is the biggest story of his career. After scoring 776 runs for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, he earned a spot in the Indian team and made his international debut against England. Subsequently, he was named 'Player of the Series' after scoring 151 runs in a three-match T20 series during the Zimbabwe tour.
