The United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a warning about a geomagnetic storm headed for Earth. This phenomenon is forecast to be at G2 level, classified as moderate, and is expected to reach the planet by this Sunday, the 30th.
This event is triggered by a coronal mass ejection (CME), which consists of a vast release of plasma and magnetic field projected by the solar corona toward space. When it reaches Earth, it can generate various communication complications.
The classification of geomagnetic storms ranges from G1 to G5, with G5 being the extreme level. In the case of G2 level, power systems located at high latitudes may register voltage alerts, and prolonged storms have the potential to damage electrical transformers.
Furthermore, the propagation of high-frequency (HF) radio waves, used in aviation, may be affected. Another possible impact is the occurrence of auroras in areas further south than usual.
Previously, last Wednesday (26), NOAA had issued a similar alert. On that occasion, the forecast indicated that a G1 geomagnetic storm would reach Earth, resulting in slight fluctuations in the power grid and minimal impacts on satellites.
