Startup launches domestic robot A3, capable of being trained by users for various tasks

Inspired by the robot featured in the 1985 film Rocky IV, where Rocky Balboa gifts his friend Paulie with Sico for household chores, a San Francisco startup has introduced a modern version of robotic assistance.

Forty years after the original scene, Nori Robotics unveiled the A3, a new domestic robot that differentiates itself from competitors by focusing on a personalized learning concept. This robot can be instructed by the users themselves to perform multiple functions, such as taking items from the refrigerator, organizing belongings, operating the dishwasher, folding clothes, and assisting with meal preparation.

Nori's methodology consists of allowing the owner to teach the desired activities to the robot. To facilitate this process, the company offers a computational simulation tool that allows for training the machine's movements, in addition to the option of direct programming.

With this system, the A3 can be adapted to the specific needs of each owner. The device is equipped with two clawed arms, capable of handling and lifting objects up to 1.5 kilograms each. Its movement through the environment is guided by LiDAR sensors and cameras.

An additional feature of the project is the ability to share skills created by users. Thus, a task taught to one A3 can be converted into a competency accessible to other robot owners.

Additionally, Nori Robotics reported that the robot maintains operational autonomy for up to eight hours on a single full charge.

Sales and Launch Details

The model's cost is set at US$ 1,688, which is equivalent to approximately R$ 8.7 thousand. The first shipment of units was quickly sold, and the company is preparing a second production limited to 100 robots. This new batch is expected to be available during the autumn of the Northern Hemisphere.

This approach represents a significant distinction compared to conventional domestic robots, which arrive to the consumer with predetermined functionalities. Machines like the A3 seek, instead, to transform the home into a space where the robot can continuously learn new actions.
