Uzbekistan and Hong Kong Discuss Expanding Cooperation in Transport Infrastructure

The Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan, Ilhom Makhamov, met with the Commissioner for the Belt and Road in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Nicholas Ho Lik-chi, in Tashkent on August 28, 2026. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss expanding interaction in the field of transport and infrastructure, according to the Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan.

During the negotiations, the parties reviewed the current state of cooperation between Uzbekistan and China in the areas of freight transport, transport, and the implementation of infrastructure projects. Particular attention was paid to agreements reached during the visit of the Uzbek delegation, led by the country's Prime Minister, to Hong Kong in May 2026, where participants discussed further steps to fulfill these obligations.

Discussion on Financing and Air Transport

One of the central issues was the participation of Hong Kong banks in financing the construction of the Tashkent–Samarkand toll highway. Ho noted that this project is a priority for Hong Kong within its overall portfolio of projects.

Furthermore, the parties discussed the prospects of signing an intergovernmental agreement on air services between Uzbekistan and Hong Kong, focusing on the possibility of establishing regular direct flights. At the conclusion of the talks, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation and agreed to continue practical work on potential transport and infrastructure projects.

The idea of assembling and localizing the production of household appliances and climate control devices in Uzbekistan was considered, as well as launching joint production initiatives and establishing supply chains with local companies. Furthermore, the parties exchanged views on implementing smart home technologies.

Ningbo Kadiya Electric Co., Ltd., founded in 2001, has a staff of over 1000 employees and specializes in the production of household and climate control appliances exported to more than 20 countries. At the end of the meeting, participants agreed to jointly develop promising investment projects, define areas of mutual cooperation, and maintain continuous working dialogue.

Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan Held Consultations on New Joint Projects

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan reported that on August 19, 2026, another round of bilateral political consultations took place in Tashkent between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.

The meeting was held under the leadership of Bobur Usmanov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, and Samir Sharifov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan. The parties discussed the current state and future prospects of Uzbek-Azerbaijani relations within the framework of their strategic partnership and alliance.
