Black Bean Chaat Recipe: A Healthy Alternative to Traditional Weekend Breakfasts

A cozy weekend morning often brings the desire to eat something special, spicy, and delicious. However, consuming parathas, puris, or poha can lead not only to weight gain but also to digestive discomfort. If you want to prepare a very healthy, light, and energizing breakfast for the weekend without sacrificing taste, black bean chaat, rich in protein and fiber, will be the perfect choice.

The combination of cooked black beans, crunchy fresh vegetables, aromatic Indian spices, and tangy lemon juice will not only provide a taste pleasure but also keep the body toned throughout the day. Below is a simple instruction on how to prepare this dish.

You will need:

  • Black beans – 1 cup (soaked in water overnight)
  • Boiled potato – 1 (cut into small pieces)
  • Onion – 1 (finely chopped)
  • Tomato – 1 (finely chopped, seeds removed)
  • Cucumber – 1/2 cup (finely chopped)
  • Chili pepper – 1–2 (finely chopped)
  • Cilantro – 2 tablespoons (finely chopped)
  • Roasted cumin powder – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Chaat masala – 1 teaspoon
  • Black salt – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Regular salt – to taste
  • Lemon juice – 1 large tablespoon
  • Finely chopped savory snacks or bhujia – 2 tablespoons (for garnish)

First, boil the soaked black beans in a multi-cooker, adding 1.5 cups of water and a pinch of salt, until they reach 4–5 whistles over medium heat. The beans must be completely cooked. After cooking, strain the bean water and let them cool.

In a large bowl, place the cooked black beans. Then add the chopped boiled potato, onion, tomato, cucumber, and chili pepper. Add the black salt, regular salt, roasted cumin powder, and chaat masala. Pour fresh lemon juice over the top so that the spice aromas penetrate the beans well.

Using a spoon, mix all the ingredients thoroughly so that the beans are evenly coated with spices and vegetables. Garnish the finished chaat with finely chopped cilantro and sprinkle with finely chopped savory snacks or bhujia for a crunchy texture. The ready hot or cold black bean chaat is ready to be served with morning tea or coffee on the weekend.
