Cloudy and rainy weather is forecast for various parts of the Western and Eastern Cape this coming weekend, with increased winds expected along the coast. Overall, South Africa is preparing for mixed weekend conditions featuring warm temperatures, overcast skies, and periods of precipitation, while strong winds and hazardous coastal conditions are anticipated in several areas.
On Saturday, central areas will experience predominantly fine, cool, or warm weather, but conditions in the southern and southwestern parts of the country will be noticeably more variable. The Western Cape will be cloudy and cool, with morning fog along the southern coast and in nearby inland areas. Scattered, short-lived rains are expected in most of the province, which may intensify into scattered precipitation along the southern coast and adjacent inland areas.
The probability of precipitation in the western and central parts is around 30%, whereas in areas along the southern coast and parts of the Garden Route, it rises to 60%. The Northern Cape will be warmer, with variable cloudiness and some hot conditions; the west will see cloud cover, and the central inland areas will experience wind.
A Level 2 yellow warning for destructive wind persists in parts of the Karoo and Namaqualand, with strong crosswinds potentially causing issues for high-sided vehicles on open roads. Furthermore, there is a serious threat of extremely high fire danger in parts of the Northern Cape, Western Cape, and Eastern Cape.
The Eastern Cape will start the day with variable cloudiness and warm or hot weather, after which cloud cover will increase over the southern coast during the day. Scattered, short-lived rains are expected, becoming more common along parts of the western coast and adjacent inland areas. Winds along the coast will strengthen from the southwest towards evening.
KwaZulu-Natal should enjoy a mostly fine and warm Saturday, although morning fog is possible in some inland areas. Northeast and north winds will strengthen along the coast, occasionally becoming strong. A Level 2 yellow warning for destructive wind and waves is in effect along the coast from Port Shepstone to Richards Bay, where adverse conditions may disrupt small vessel, port, and harbor activities.
Gauteng, Free State, and North West will begin the weekend mostly dry, with good conditions and temperatures ranging from cool to warm. Mpumalanga will see patches of morning fog over the eastern Highveld and Escarpment, while Lowveld will be warmer and partly cloudy. Limpopo will be good in the west but partly cloudy elsewhere, with cool to warm conditions.
Sunday will bring another mixed picture. The southern parts of the country remain the main focus for precipitation, with a 60% chance of rain and showers predicted in parts of the Eastern Cape and southern coastal zones. Approximately 30% probability is expected in parts of the Western Cape, Northern Cape, and central Eastern Cape. Inland areas of the Eastern Cape will remain partly cloudy and warm or hot, while southern areas will become increasingly cloudy.
The Western Cape will remain mostly cloudy and cool on Sunday, with continued isolated showers, and some southern coastal areas may again see scattered precipitation. Temperatures in the northeastern part of the province will be milder. Strong south to southwest winds will add coolness along the coast. Further north, Sunday should remain predominantly dry, with good conditions in Gauteng, North West, and most of the Free State. Parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga will be partly cloudy, with warmer conditions in the Lowveld. Along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, the wind will remain gusty and may occasionally strengthen, while temperatures will remain warm.
