The captain who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav, faced an unexpected decision to be excluded from the team immediately after the tournament concluded. In July 2024, Suryakumar headed the Indian T20 squad, and under his leadership, the team won both the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup, without him missing a single T20 tournament.
Despite these successes, the selection committees appointed Shreyas Iyer as captain for the upcoming tours in England and Ireland, replacing Suryakumar. For the first time, Suryakumar Yadav openly shared his feelings following this decision.
He admitted that he initially tried to accept the decisions of the selection committees, but over time, the issue began to bother him: 'How is this possible? How can this happen?'
In a conversation with former Indian player Akash Chopra, he recounted that when he learned of his absence from the squad, his first reaction was a smile. He noted that he tries to remain calm and smile even in difficult situations or under pressure. He also expressed gratitude for all the opportunities he received.
Nevertheless, Suryakumar did not expect such a decision in early 2026, believing he could lead the team for another two years, considering major goals like the Olympics and the next T20 World Cup.
He emphasized that people's thoughts can diverge: 'I thought I would lead this team for another two years after 2026. The Olympics will come, then there will be another T20 World Cup, and there are many challenges ahead. But what you think and what your opponent thinks can be different. If the selection committees considered it the best decision for the future, they made it. I didn't react to it.'
Regarding the appointment of Shreyas Iyer as captain, Suryakumar had no objections. He stated that he has known Shreyas for a long time and trusts him as both a good player and a person and a captain.
However, the real difficulties started later. Despite trying to understand the selection committee's decision, he couldn't shake the question: 'How can this be?'
He added: 'I was a bit disappointed because you haven't lost a match in two years. You won the World Cup and the Asia Cup. And then you want the same thing to continue. Why the change when everything was going well? What is the reason for the change? This kept running through my head.'
After being dropped from the team, he spent about a month and a half at home, reflecting on the matter. He recalls: 'I thought: how can this be? How is this possible? We just won the World Cup. Yes, the IPL didn't go as well as I wanted. But we were at home. Friends came, family came. Everyone said it was okay, it's part of life. But when everyone leaves the house, only you are left.'
This period became a time when the world champion was forced to rethink his future for the first time.
Suryakumar also revealed that the selection committee contacted him two or three days before the squad announcement. They informed him in advance that his name would not be in the squad for the series in England.
He stated: 'They called me two or three days ago. They said it was time to move on. I didn't react because it wasn't my decision. Whoever made the decision probably thought it was best for the team. You made the decision and told me, there is no problem with that.'
Suryakumar's statement reveals another side of the entire incident: on one hand, the selection committees had reasons related to the decline in batting performance and the preparation of the future team, and on the other hand, under his leadership, the Indian T20 team demonstrated exceptional results. Thus, the question was not only about who would replace Suryakumar, but also why the captain who brought constant victories to India was excluded from the team precisely during its triumph.
