The Proteas team began its T20I three-series tournament in Namibia with a heavy defeat to the host team in Windhoek on Friday. In the match played at the Namibian cricket ground, the South African team faced difficulties early in the game.
After Proteas captain Bjorn Fortuin won the toss and decided to bat first, Namibia quickly reached 57 runs without losing a wicket. Openers Jan Frylink and Lauren Steenkamp set the pace at nine runs per over. Frylink managed to capitalize on an early reprieve after Proteas debutant Duane Jansen was removed from the field in the third over.
The situation worsened for South Africa when fast bowler Luto Siphamla had to leave the field in the ninth over due to a hamstring injury. Eventually, Fortuin managed to break through, dismissing Steenkamp for 41 runs when Namibia reached 85/1 midway through the innings.
Developments in the first innings
Frylink continued the assault, scoring two fours and two sixes thanks to Fortuin. However, he made a mistake, and Dewald Brevis dismissed him with a partial leg-spin delivery in the 13th over. Frylink scored 60 runs off 47 balls, including six fours and two sixes. His dismissal triggered a collapse as South African spinners delivered the decisive blow. Senuran Subraen became the main destroyer, taking three quick wickets, and finished his innings with figures of 3/32, taking Namibia's score from 133/3 in the 15th over to 138/6 after 17 overs. Fortuin also showed good play, taking 2/16 in four overs, and Jansen took two wickets in the 19th over, when Namibia finished with a total of 163/9.
Chasing attempt and Namibia's victory
South Africa's attempt to score did not start convincingly: Jordan Herman and Lhuandre Pretoria were dismissed for a small number of runs before Brevis and Tony de Zorzi tried to regain momentum. De Zorzi's dismissal put Proteas in a difficult position with a score of 39/3 after seven overs. Nevertheless, Brevis refused to abandon his attacking style, even after being hit by a bouncer. His first six came from Bernard Scholtz in the 10th over, and his second brought the South African team to 67/3. Rubin Herman briefly supported the attack but was dismissed by Ruben Trumpelmanning for 12 runs, leaving South Africa at 81/4.
Brevis continued to counterattack, reaching a half-century and pushing South Africa's score above 100 along with Jansen. But after hitting his fifth six and four, bringing his score to 74, he was dismissed by Trumpelmanning in the 18th over with a brilliant score of 75 runs off 50 balls. Trumpelmanning finished the match with figures of 3/24, while the Namibian bowlers remained composed at the end of the game, restricting South Africa to 145/9 and securing their victory in the first match of the series by 18 runs.
