Tires are subject to natural wear and require periodic replacement. Although new vehicles come with energy-efficient compounds, the situation upon replacement often differs: many owners opt for cheaper models or high-performance variants that prioritize grip over rolling resistance.
The California Energy Commission (CEC) intends to change this situation by introducing unprecedented efficiency standards for replacement tires in the United States.
This measure, planned for gradual implementation starting in 2029 and full enforcement by 2033, applies to passenger cars and light commercial vehicles sold in the state. According to the CEC, this requirement should help reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and electricity, leading to savings for drivers and a decrease in pollutant emissions.
Nevertheless, this proposal has caused concern in the automotive market due to its financial impact and restrictions for enthusiasts.
According to official forecasts, tires may experience a price increase, estimated at approximately $1.50 per unit in the first phase, potentially reaching $6.50 per tire in the next stage. Although the regulatory body argues that fuel savings will offset the additional cost over the component's lifespan, experts question the accuracy of these calculations, especially given the historical volatility of fuel prices in the region.
The program provides exemptions for certain categories, such as winter tires, racing compounds, large SUVs, and retreaded tires. However, the lack of clear protection for summer performance tires is worrying for enthusiasts, who fear significant price hikes or the need to seek products outside the state. While major manufacturers publicly support the technological initiative, critics point out that stricter regulations could lead to market concentration and harm smaller brands.
