Rockstar released an extended 26-minute video on YouTube last night dedicated to GTA VI. This video showcases impressive graphics, although it does not reveal plot details.
The video features clips from various missions where the main characters, Jason and Lucia, engage in 'security' activities both in the criminal world and outside of it. Furthermore, the video provided a lot of information about GTA VI, which is scheduled for release on November 19th.
The first thing that catches the eye is the extremely high quality of the visualization. The camera appears more cinematic due to changes in angles and zooming at key moments, and the characters are significantly larger and more detailed compared to the previous game.
Lighting and reflection effects are also noteworthy, matching or exceeding the graphical richness of top linear games like The Last of Us: Part II, but doing so on a much grander scale within a massive open world.
The scene shown at 18:45, where Lucia jumps from a building roof with a parachute, produces a particularly strong effect, allowing a view of most of the city with almost photorealistic detail.
GTA VI truly sets a new visual standard for games, and perhaps the most striking aspect is that this is achieved on standard hardware. The video was filmed not on a powerful PC or PS5 Pro, but on a base PlayStation 5. The graphics of GTA VI are so good that they could extend the life of the current console generation, giving Sony and Microsoft an extra year or two before the next consoles are released. This might help slightly alleviate the global RAM shortage currently driving up electronics prices.
Moreover, the video shows that Rockstar continues to masterfully capture and satirize details of modern life. At one point in the video, an influencer exits a car trunk holding a phone, live-streaming as part of an internet 'challenge.'
It is clear that this 'extended look' at GTA VI was carefully calculated to maintain and amplify hype while avoiding the revelation of many plot details. It succeeds brilliantly in this task, providing grounds for even greater optimism regarding the game.
