The Golden Gloves initiative to revitalize the South African boxing system received a promising start on Thursday evening with the first showcase of Shaya Thursdays, which attracted around 800 spectators at the Emperors Palace stadium.
The new Pro-Am series, organized through the Golden Gloves Foundation, is designed to provide young amateurs and developing professionals with a regular platform to showcase their abilities and help identify future boxing stars.
Legendary South African boxing figure Jeff Ellis curates the fight card and manages the event, aiming to create a genuine pathway from local gyms to the professional level. The inaugural show demonstrated clear public interest in this concept.
Alvin Pillay, Head of Events and Programming for the Golden Gloves Foundation, highly praised the event, calling it 'amazing' and 'full of energy.' She noted that the atmosphere, crowd, and overall energy met all expectations.
Fight Program and Its Significance
The six-fight program included both amateur and professional bouts. This gave novice fighters the chance to experience the atmosphere of a major boxing event, while professionals could stay active and build their resumes.
Pillay believes this experience is particularly valuable for amateurs. She emphasized that the opportunity to compete in a ring with lighting, sound, and the support of a large audience is a huge advantage after training in small gyms.
For professionals, it means having an additional regular way to find fights instead of waiting long for a major tournament. Pillay added that a successful performance can attract the attention of other promoters and potential sponsors.
A Start with a Knockout
The first evening featured memorable performances. Zimbabwean lightweight boxer Biven Sibanda returned after a year-long injury layoff, defeating Tshepo Mokhele in the first round. Heavyweight prospect Ethan Peters continued his perfect winning streak, securing his fourth first-round knockout against Siyanda Mtethwa.
Ronaldo Sibisi and Jo-Lee van Toonder also secured knockouts, while Jules Ngombo won by points, and Charles Marokane and Katlego Mokwana ended their bout in a draw.
However, for Golden Gloves, the fight results are secondary to the long-term potential of Shaya Thursdays. The foundation aims to identify talent before it gets lost between the amateur and professional systems, helping to develop fighters from local gyms.
The long-term goal is to create success stories where fighters begin their journey in small gyms and eventually reach major professional titles. Pillay expressed a desire to see stories like: 'I started here, and now I am fighting in the professional division or working towards an SA title.'
Furthermore, it was noted that the program could strengthen the boxing community itself. Pillay cited an example where a boxer from Durban, arriving with only one corner man, was immediately supported by another trainer. She stressed that the community surrounding boxing is very rich and generous.
Audience feedback also prompted Golden Gloves to consider expanding the event. VIP tickets sold out, and general admission was nearly full, with Pillay estimating attendance at around 800 people. For a first time, this is a significant response, indicating that Shaya Thursdays could become more than just another date on the boxing calendar.
