Changan has expanded its electric vehicle lineup in South Africa by introducing the Deepal S05 REEV and the Changan Uni-S HEV at the Festival of Motoring exhibition in Kyalami this week.
The Deepal S05 is positioned as a mid-size SUV and differs from the larger S07 model by utilizing range extender technology instead of a fully electric powertrain.
The S05 REEV is equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that functions solely as a generator, not driving the wheels. Instead, the vehicle is powered by a 160 kW electric motor producing 320 Nm of torque, drawing power from a 27 kWh battery.
Changan claims that the S05 can travel over 1000 km on a combined cycle while providing up to 200 km of pure electric range. The company also states that the battery supports fast charging, claiming a charging time of 20 minutes when connected to a suitable charger.
The S05 features rear-wheel drive and offers four driving modes: Comfort, Eco, Sport, and Custom. Standard equipment includes a 15.4-inch touchscreen multimedia display supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 14-speaker audio system, wireless smartphone charging, heated and ventilated front seats, and a panoramic roof.
The vehicle's safety system incorporates six airbags, a 540-degree view camera, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and front and rear parking sensors.
Regarding the Changan Uni-S HEV, the company also presented a hybrid version of its mid-size SUV, the Uni-S, which was previously launched in the local market as a gasoline-only model in April.
The Uni-S HEV combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, producing 110 kW and 220 Nm of torque, with an electric motor. The total system output power is 166 kW and 290 Nm. Power is delivered to the front wheels via an electronic continuously variable transmission (CVT), and Changan reports a combined fuel consumption of 4.0 liters per 100 km.
The hybrid Uni-S version also debuted in South Africa. This model is available in CL and CE specifications, equipped with 18-inch and 19-inch wheels, respectively. It includes six airbags, second-level driver assistance systems, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and a 540-degree view camera. The interior is finished with microfiber leather, featuring heated and ventilated front seats, and a 12.8-inch touchscreen multimedia display supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
